Well seeing that my WDTV live player will not load netflix or bbciplayer im looking for a new Device. Just a question regarding the Roku 3 will it play back files from an external usb device which are from my pc. I am tempted to get the Roku 1 but i dont know if that will play back external usb but if it did that would be fine and id be saving £40.

I haven't tested it myself, but it is "technically", it is possible via an app (or channel as Roku calls them) called "USB Media Player" which will work. The catch being that videos must be in MP4, M4V and MKV format.

You could also use something like Plex which is free and have the server on your computer (along with the files). Then on your Roku, load the Plex channel and you can stream your own files across. The advantages of this are:

It will remember the last spot in a show you watched, as well as the last shows.
It has poster art and infomation on shows which becomes handy if your library grows.
It is a great, sofa-friendly UI.
On the other hand, there are some cons.

Files have to be saved in the right folders and the correct naming convention otherwise Plex won't see them.
There is quite a bit of maintenance to keep the library in good nick.
Your computer must be on during the browsing and playback.
It will as I understand it, the same way as my Blu-ray player does,at least ref video/audio files.
I am thinking of buying one and that would be an essential feature, don't think its on the lower Roku models though.
To be clear,I would expect to be able to download video content,in the right format/codec to a usb memory stick then play it on my TV via the Roku, feel sure I could do that with the Roku 3.

Do you have any form of SmartDNS in your network?

If not, it should be part of the standard channel line-up (actually, it should still be part of the line-up even with SmartDNS, but just trying to rule that out). Do you see Demand 5 and Now TV in the channel store?
