Can I use my dated speakers on a modern AV ?
Hi all,
I have had my basic surround system for a good couple of years now & am tempted to get a ONKYO TXNR414 either just before Xmas or in the new year. Now as I am not the richest of people, I cannot afford a speaker package on top of the AV straight away, but I would like a decent AV with HDMI connections, which will be compatible with my PS3 / SKY HD box etc etc & able to be used on next gen consoles, should it be an Xbox One or PS4. The system I am using at the moment is a basic Phillips DVD player & the speakers with sub, connect into the back of the DVD player via colour coded plugs. Now I was wondering if it were possible to snip off the plugs & then wire each speaker into the new AV, or would I be better off getting a basic speaker package for the AV ? Many Thanks

Is the sub active or passive? If it is passive it won't work with the Onkyo.
Also you need to check out the impedance of the speakers. The Onkyo is probably not going to like anything under 4-6 ohms and I have seen some all in one speakers as low as 3ohms. Ideally you would pair the amp up with a decent speaker package, for example http://www.richersounds.com/product/...yama-nsp40-blk for £150 That would get you started with the Onkyo nicely. If the cost puts you off an alternative might be this http://www.richersounds.com/product/...72/pion-htp072 A Pioneer amp and speaker package for only £20 more than the Onkyo on it's own from Richersounds.Pioneer do some perfectly respectable kit and for the money it probably beats any similarly priced all in one system. |

I must admit that the pioneer does look a really nice system, I will have to read some reviews of both AV receivers & then listen to both in Richer Sounds, as I am lucky enough to have one within walking distance. To answer you question to do with the speakers, I have to confess that I had to go onto my ebay account, search back to when I bought the system in 2011, so that I could google the model number and find out, the technical specifications of the speakers . Any how here is what I found out ![]() Satellite speaker drivers: 3" full-range woofer Satellite speaker impedance: 4 ohm Satellite speaker freq range: 150-20,000 Hz Centre Speaker: Magnetically shielded Centre speaker drivers: 3" full-range woofer Centre speaker impedance: 8 ohm Centre freq range: 150-20,000 Hz Subwoofer driver: 6.5" high-efficiency woofer Subwoofer type: Passive Subwoofer impedance: 8 ohm Subwoofer freq range: 45-150 Hz |

The Phillips sub is passive. Which means it will be no use with the Onkyo as that requires an active sub, it has no built in amplifier to drive a passive sub. Most AV amps are like that.
The Pioneer receiver that forms part of that package deal can drive a passive sub but doesn't appear to be available without the speakers. |
