I'm no fan of their music, but selling 115K In the UK for day1 at this current climate is truly Amazing.

To be expected I guess. Honestly, 1D could release an album of themselves farting and it would still get No 1.

This is also all thanks to pre-orders and the first day rush, so their diehard fans bought the album. It will be interesting to see the end result - I'm thinking 140-160K.

Why does it make you a sheep to like their music?

Looks like they will be No 1 in USA too with good sales. Pretty impressive and considering is a step away from their first two albums

ETA that the whole album also leaked on line a week ago so it looks like it hasn't harmed the pre orders

WHY? maybe not your cup of tea but if enough people like their music and buy it what effect does that have on you! There's tons of artists doing well who I don't like but it doesn't depress me if they get top of the charts!!

Was just looking on Buzzjack see if I can find how many albums have even managed those sales in their first week. Bet it's only a handful this year. The 20th best selling album of the entire year has only sold just over 200k.

It's depressing because this country has a wealth of talent that can't get anywhere near the charts because the modern music industry is only interested in mass marketable tripe that fits a certain image.

People like Kaz Simmons, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Aynsley Lister and many many more have more talent in a single strand of hair than One Direction do collectively. Yet, they don't sell as much music.

Why is it depressing that people like bands that you don't like? Good musicians will be successful if they are good enough.

Yeah but it's mostly kids and young teens who buy One Direction's music. That's who they're marketed at. There are loads of talented artists out there who don't get a look in because of talentless halfwits like this. 1D are not musicians. They're nothing more than a cash cow for Simon Cowell IMO. They're completely manufactured in every way.

Not so sure bout this. A number of shops have sold out. So it seems in addition to per orders, there's still a strong demand.

Yes, but that is why I said, besides the pre-order, many also bought the album because it is the first day. those who are eager to hear it. The sales will probably decrease through the week. Actually, they could reach 200K, but MAYBE.

Frankly, I don't care who it is, I'm just happy to see higher sales in the UK chart after so long.

Correct, but that's not what the masses think of when they listen to the music, if they like the songs then they shall buy.
I would say One Direction are very very very lucky young men indeed.
I see only 2 with good voices and star quality.

The "masses" like bland, heavily marketed music they hear on the radio, they always have and they always will.

Come on guys, boybands have been volume-shifting powerhouses for years. The formula works, the formula will continue.

If 1D weren't around it doesn't automatically mean someone else like the artists listed earlier would be where they are does it?

1D have started a 'Brit invasion' of America if you like, lots of British talent has gone out there and made it successful due to being British (not saying music in particular, but in other things too because of the 1D obsession), so in fact 1D being successful has helped other people make it (including content makers on YouTube, some of who were brought to the attention of their fans cos of them)

Impressive but that is their problem. Sales are high for the first 72 hours and then drop like a stone. They début strong then fade, it's why they have never managed a US #1 single.
