Because they are pretty boys who have been endlessly marketed on their looks at a target demograph that hasn't yet acquired a taste for music - and will lap up any crappy mercendise because it's their first crush..

Do you also need to try a Furby? They are popular with young girls.

Good theory, but not proven.

Equally, it hasn't been proven that high sales = quality.

Have you seen K-pop?........Now that IS manufactured from an assembly line!

And that is why I bought Dido and Adele

That's because this is a music forum and this thread is about a gimmick marketed on image not music.

It's akin to going onto a book forum and making a thread about Katie Prices latest ghost written trash being the number one best seller this week.

I don't know why people get so worked up about One Direction being successful. It's hilarious. I like plenty of 'proper' music (whatever that is), but I also like some fun dumb pop sometimes. And actually, as well as being fun, their new album is actually pretty decent, so.

I remember I used to have this attitude about music when I was about 14 and I thought musical taste actually mattered. Who cares, like what you like, and don't worry about the rest.

When you have such high pre-orders, you're obviously fading after 1-2 days. Let's just see at what level their sales stabilise. It's already been pointed out that their albums DO have amazing longevity! Still top 40 after 1 and 2 years.

And Story Of My Life, their latest single, is in its 5th week on the charts and might get a new peak this week. That's not exactly "dropping like a stone"... There are other (better) examples for that

You know what? I feel sorry for them, they always get bashed and haven't actually done anything wrong, they are nice, likeable boys and I have never seen them acting like asses a la The Wanted, they seem to genuinely appreciate their success, I like that they do well, I'm not the biggest fan but I say good for them!

Glad someone agrees. Things like this have you questioning the whole concept of capitalism and democracy

I don't think One Direction have ever relied on Auto-tune. They don't really sing the type of music that needs it.

Its hardly snobbery as this is a forum used to express taste in music. If sales really do indicate talent, then old music must be better as the biggest selling albums are from the likes of Pink Floyd, AC DC and Michael Jackson, not generic rubbish that clogs up the charts.

That pretty much sums them up. I had real crap taste in music as a kid. I was into cheesy pop crap like S Club 7, Vengaboys, Aqua, Hear'Say, Westlife and that sort of thing. I don't listen to that stuff any more.

One Direction aren't "cheesy pop crap" though. I listened to the new album earlier today. It's more like an Ed Sheeran album with a few McFly-like pop-rock anthems thrown in.
