I don't mind them personally, the only thing relating to them that really grinds my gears is the die hard fans, but that's another thread............

Surely "quality music" is subjective? That goes for anything in any walk of life. There will always be a band such as The Beatles, or a piece of art work such as the Mona Lisa etc. that's held up as the pinnacle of something. Yet not everyone would call the Mona Lisa a fantastic painting, or would think The Beatles made fantastic music.

I'm not saying that The Beatles make bad music, or that One Direction have something they don't but 1D fans think their music is quality. Try to make their opinion seem less than it is by saying the fans are sheep all you want, but their ears like what they hear.

There's lots of things in which you can determine what is the best quality product, music is not one of them (and yes, all music is a product being sold, regardless of who's selling it).

But is it their ears or their eyes which like what they like?

I would say it's their eyes to start off with and we all know that tweenies are fickle but the fact they are staying loyal after 3 albums makes me think it isn't all eyes but ears are coming into it now too

I don't understand this. You'll check it out because it sold loads of copies? How is that a valid way to listen to music?
It is pop music we are mainly concerned with, so why not?

The Archies were cartoon characters on a TV show, I really dont think you can get less 'organic' than that.

The Monkees were exactly like 1D, put together specifically to make a TV show about a band, and then released some songs.

I'll also throw in Bay City Rollers, who were not only as manufactured but probably worse singers than 1D

None of this is new. This is the history of chart music, its always been this, it always will be this.
Great isn't it. I can map out my life with those bands. And I still listen to The Monkees.

For what it's worth, I don't know the album but the single 'The Story of My Life' is a class(ic) pop single for any era. It's not generic at all. Generic is a much overused word on these threads. Remember if quality in music is as relative as many suggest on DS, then 15 yr old girls know just as much about good music as anyone else.

I make that two brilliant pop singles from 1D which will be played for years. If not Cowell, someone at Syco knows what they are doing.

I don't understand people's problem with One Direction. I'm in my late twenty's and I'm not a fan and wouldn't listen to their music. However, if I was 11 or 12 then I would probably love them. They're aimed at kids. They're aimed at a young audience. Did nobody here like SClub Juniors or similar bands when they were a young kid? What is the big issue with them? Are kids not allowed to have music that they can like and be fans of?! Who cares if One Direction are everywhere?! It's what happens when boy bands or groups aimed at kids are in the charts...they have fan clubs and kids rush out and buy their music. It's been like that for years. Some people here really need to get out more.

No it's not. It sounds similar to other popular songs of the last few years. There's even a touch of the Mumford and Sons about it imo. In that sense there is a kind of 'generic' feel to it, like the writers have used other recent songs as a template. It's not a bad song and it' seems like a smart move to give them a more mature sound but classic it ain't.

'What Makes You Beautiful' I will give you, as I've already said. That's a pure pop song with a melody that will stand the test of time. That shines through despite the lyrics and singing imo.

Appreciate it for what it is not what you think it is.

It's a great song. You'll recognise how good it is eventually. I didn't get how good 'What Makes You Beautiful' is immediately myself.

Patronising much? lol. Maybe I've just heard more songs so I can see that it doesn't have the qualities you think it does. It doesn't stand out enough to be seen as a classic imo.

Let's return to this thread in 20 years time and see who was right .

Part of the problem is that they're overexposed and the media shove them in our faces a lot and those who are not fans or not really interested in their music/career find it a bit boring. They're everywhere!

as is everything... look elsewhere!!

Ok, so I had enough of the hate on here and went to my local HMV this morning and bought the album so I could hear it for myself!
And, actually, it's pretty good, there are a few I'm not keen on but for the most part it's an album consisting of folky, 80's electronic rock music, INSANELY catchy choruses, strong vocals and tight harmonies, very impressed actually.

really?? hate on DS made you do that? and you liked the album?

now i'm a believer-- there's an upside to everything

the boys of 1D are more involved in the making of the 3rd album than the first two... they have credits in 12 of the 14 songs in the album... the sound is getting more mature and points at once to their inspirations/ what they liked listening to growing up, as well as the direction they are now taking as a maturing group...

Excited to hear this album but I don't think they'll ever have a better song than Little Things.

It surprises me why so many posters think 1D are just a kiddie band . You don't get those huge sales from just 11 or 12 yr olds.

I am a member of another music forum and when they did an age shout out there were loads of posters in their 20's 30's and 40's. I am a grandmother and like their music as does my granddaughter but I doubt she will like the new album as it's not as poppy but still catchy sing along tunes

many consider "story of my life" their best song to date, but maybe that's just personal preference at work

but SOML is currently on the A List of Radio 1... and Radio 2!!

Sorry I explained that wrong. They are aimed at a younger audience. That is who they have been targeted at. However, their appeal has obviously extended far beyond who they are aimed at which has contributed to their huge success. I don't understand why people have such an issue with them. Also, although they're not the sort of band or music I listen to, I saw them perform on X Factor last weekend and they can actually sing. Not incredible out of this world voices, but they were very good.

Anybody remember back in 2011 when their 2nd single missed #1, then everybody was saying "They're over", "The hype is already fading", etc?

I don't listen to One Direction, but people are overly harsh to them imo... There's thousands of artists out there who never even get a top 200 hit, and their careers aren't over.

Wow, that's an incredibly impressive number, they've just sold more albums in one week than some popular acts have sold in months. Good for them, it's nice to see a British act do so well.

What a load of nonsense this post is. One direction could produce fart noises for an entire album and those little brainwashed girls would still buy it.

Little girls are easy to brainwash so therefore they aim these five boys at them. As if real music fans will ever accept them lol.

I remember when i was a boy, i was mad into five, and now i dont think much of them. So personally i dont mind them, they bring enjoyment to little kids around the world so its all good.

Music is on a massive decline though.
