ok , so I'm looking for a new laptop , but it must have a dvd rewriter .

should be a simple enough task , but as I look at the specs on different models online I just can't see any mention of the DVD specifics in the list .
sometimes there'll be a question asking if there is one and they'll say "yes" .

anyway - maybe I'm not getting the computer jargon ? how do I tell if it has one or not ?

Where are you looking?

I would've thought it'd be rare to get a DVD drive on a laptop that WASN'T RW nowadays...

These days pretty much every drive i've come across is a dual layer rewriter on laptops now.

Interesting point, actually... I just had a quick look on Argos and the info is terrible. Even when you can clearly see that a laptop has an optical drive in the photos there's no mention of the optical drive in the specs...

ETA: on Tesco they write stuff like "Optical Drive Type: DVD super multi dual layer"...

From what I can see from laptop specs on the Argos site the only brand which actually lists DVD+RW/DVD-RW is Toshiba
e.g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Multi

Standard from the DVD Forum for reading and writing -R/RW discs. Because the +R/RW format isn't part of the DVD Forum, the unofficial term 'Super Multi' has been invented to include them.

But the point stands, the techincal information on many retailers websites is shocking. You really need to double-check on the manufacturers websites, which can end up becoming a chore.

A case in point: a friend of mine got this laptop recently from Tesco. One of the things the description misses out is the dedicated 1GB graphics card, in addition to the APU graphics
