Whether some fans of the show want to admit it or not, the X Factor is now in one of its most challenging stages of its existence. Ratings have declined, it is being beaten by Strictly and is no longer ‘must-see’ television. However The X Factor is still the leading singing competition, when it comes to finding artists that will sell records. The show itself needs a revamp if it is to continue for another ten years, not major changes, however each stage needs new elements introduced.

The Judging Panel

When a judging panel really connects with each other the chemistry can be electric. X Factor reached 19 million viewers for its final in 2010, one of the reasons was the viewers connected with the panel. It needs to find that balance again of judges, who the audience can warm to, can give constructive criticism and who really understand where the contestants are coming from.

The UK X Factor NEEDS Simon Cowell back, so therefore I believe he deserves a place on the panel. Love or loathe him, he tells the truth, and is made for television, his knowledge is much needed, as he knows what will sell in the real world. We need three fresh judges to bring introduce a new era of X Factor, I’m not sure bringing old faces back will help the show evolve.

For me Louis Walsh is now the real enigma of X Factor, yes he can be funny, however is he truly relevant? We need a new manager who is currently managing successful acts, or has experience in the A & R department of a label. The introduction of a new female judge who is there to find an artist that will sell records, who isn’t just there for their music career, and who won’t hold back in fear of being judged.

There is only one woman if I was working for ITV, I would hire and that is Mairead Nash, manager of Florence and the Machine. Mairead is also a renowned DJ and founded the label Luv Luv Luv. She is gutsy, opinionated, and knows exactly what it takes to be successful in the today’s industry. She will be majorly unknown to the wider British public, however that is what makes her appointment so exciting. The reality TVjuggernaut needs this risky element back on the panel again, so the viewers are seeing are hearing a fresh viewpoint.

It is always important to get an artist on a panel that is currently selling records, and is doing what the contestants dream off achieving. This person should be an artist that will hit the headlines, has global fans and is the epitome of a modern day recording artist. They should represent their generation of music listeners. Rita Ora has been mentioned as a potential judge, however for me I just don’t think she has been established in the music industry for long enough. She also hasn’t the personality that will make great TV when the show gets to its live stages.

For me Marina Diamandis from the band Marina and the Diamonds, is the perfect choice as the new singer to take a seat on the panel. Marina’s musical influences are incredibly varied, she appeals to the pop music listener while also delving into the indie scene. She can therefore appeal to the general public, while enticing possible new viewers to the show. Marina has her own unique individual style which separates her from her pop contemporaries, and also the female judges she would be replacing. At the age of 28, she is still young but has enough experience in the industry to know what it involves to be successful, and have a long lasting career.

The final place on the panel I believe should go to a Radio DJ. We had the days of Neil Fox on the Pop Idol panel, and I am stunned there have been no more Radio DJ’s on a British reality panel since. This could help to really set X Factor apart from its main competition, and bring that new viewpoint to the panel.

Radio hosts are playing the most current forms of music, they know what sells, and what the listener wants to hear. Their guidance and knowledge could therefore be incredibly beneficial to the contestant, as they could help develop their sound to appeal to the masses. A radio host has to continually keep their audience engaged for approximately two hours, so they therefore know how to interact with the viewers and keep them interested. This is necessary for a judge who is doing live television.

The best person for the job is Scott Mills, who is a Radio 1 DJ. Scott has previously won the Sony Music Radio Academy Award for the Music Radio Personality of the year and a Loaded Lafta for Funniest DJ. This highlights that he is renowned for his radio presenting and DJ sets, while also entertaining his audience. He has been involved on X Factor as a mentor, on the Serbian version at their judges’ houses. By watching this video it is clear to see he would be a knowledgeable, authentic and humorous judge.

Personally, the best panel is one that has a balance of knowledge, charisma, humour and interaction. By having Simon Cowell, Mairead Nash, Marina Diamandis and Scott Mills on the X Factor judging desk in 2014 would be the start something different. The viewers would have an unknown element to consider as these personalities wouldn’t have been seen on a television screen before. Well off course Simon has, but he has three new colleagues creating fresh dynamic.

I picked four “individuals”, with their own opinions. Simon will be looking for the commercial artist, Mairead will be thinking from both a managerial viewpoint along with how the artist portrays themself as a unique selling artist. Marina will be able to sympathise with the performer, as she is doing what they dream off achieving, while Scott can listen to their voices and see can he see himself playing their songs on Radio 1.

That is my vision of the re-invention of the X Factor judging panel. It is important to both celebrate and change the dynamics of the show to entice that next generation of viewers. Do you agree ? Who would you like to see judging the contestants in 2014.

Technically speaking yea - good shouts but we need the personality and the glamour. That's where Nicole and Sharon come and and we need someone like them. It's why Cheryl was there etc.

Scott mills is a good shout tho.

Hmm, this is the first time I've heard the proposal of using a Radio DJ as a judge. Interesting stuff.

Marina Diamandis is a good shout. Alternative, but popular with a good voice to boot.

Personally, I think you need a musician/producer type who can challenge Will.I.Am on The Voice. I'd personally bring in Calvin Harris.

I think Marki Costello would be a good choice for a revamp. She's like the female Simon Cowell.

Marina and the Diamonds isn't a band. It's Marina's stage name.

That article is a joke right? That would be a diabolical panel. Especially Scott Mills!

I don't believe it. I think they are just managing expectations by mentioning rubbish names. Then in a few months time we will get to learn who the real judges are and be suitably impressed by the better known personalities. So my guess is these people are being used by Simon Cowell to manage expectations and are not the real judges.

If I'm wrong then Simon made another critical mistake on the scale of hiring Tulisa.

It's a "dream panel" not a real announcement.

I don't think the article is stating that these will be the people on the panel, just who the writer wants to be on the panel. But a panel like this has 0% chance of ever happening, thank god

That's an awful lineup. Simon needs to come back and Louis needs to stay. I don't particularly like Louis, but he offers continutity to the show as a whole as he's been there from day one. Also, you have to remeber that the show isn't about finding the next big star. It's about entertainment and bringing in viewers to ITV which then in turn enables the show to get renewed for further series...which means more money for Simon Cowell. Think of how many times Louis has picked good acts to go home...viewers are outraged and it causes headlines. ITV love that. It's all publicity. Simon and Louis defintiely need to come back next year. Who joins them is a difficult one. It needs to be two women, who, like someone else here said, bring the glamour to the show. I think they need to get Cheryl and Danni back really...that lineup was perfect. They need to throw as much money at them as possible to get them back. That's when the show worked and both were good judges and took the show seriously. Both are well liked. Those 4 judges are needed back. It's been so cringy the last few years having to listen to Gary, Tulisa etc say how incredible certain acts are, when really they haven't been a patch on acts in previous series. We need judges who are honest. If ITV want to save the show, they need to empty the bank account and get Simon, Cheryl, Danni and Louis back.

Not Danni Minouge. Really don't understand the clamour to get her back on the panel I was pretty delighted when she carted off.

I think Cheryl will be tempted back for the right pay cheque, she hasn't got much else going on by the looks of things. Simon will return when the USA show is inevitably canned and if he's there so will Louis. I'd back Nicole to remain on the panel, she just looks at home and happy doing the job as well as being fairly popular.

A music reality tv panel doesn't need huge stars to be successful, that is what people THINK it needs. The market is saturated with music stars becoming reality tv judges. It should be the personality and knowledge which should be considered.

Look at Simon, Randy and Paula - Simon, Piers, Amanda - Simon, Sharon, Louis.

All these people aren't massive names, but they were good television and gave good sound advice. I think if X Factor did a panel like this, it would allow itself to stand out from the rest. Obviously a full panel of singers doesn't work

Marina would go down awful with the public. I adore her but she's so sarcastic and has a satirical sense of humour. The public wouldn't "get her". They need females who are easy to digest like Cheryl Cole. Marina has been considered before though, I know that much.

I actually like this panel the most out of all the ones that have been in the last few years. I'd be happy for them all to stay for a few more series.

Revamp - why?

The show is dead meat and no longer relevant or entertaining. It is only worthy to take the mick out of.

So, therefore, it would matter little who was on the panel!

If you're having Scott, you've gotta have Chris Stark on the Xtra Factor.
