'Good morning, Good Morning' which is Susanna's would have been a better AS.

The Tommy Steele version that bendymixer posted has three voices and, to be honest, I couldn't hear a lot of difference between that one and the original.


I saw that programme! It was fascinating stuff. I've always loved Marnie Nixon's voice, which was used for many great musical films of the 1950s. Sigh.


As I recall from the programme, Debbie Reynolds did sing some of the songs and I'm pretty sure it's her voice you hear on Good Morning, even if was Jean Hagan dubbing Debbie dubbing Jean...




I am greatly saddened that there are people out there who don't know Singin' In The Rain, which is the greatest musical ever made (fact, not opinion ). If anybody hasn't seen it, do so - it's one of the few musicals where you don't find yourself wishing they'd hurry up with the in between stuff and get back to the songs - the script is hilarious.

But maybe it explains why the producers have ignored the incredible pantheon of wonderful old musicals and opted for a couple of relatively modern Disney films and a pop/dance film - none of which qualifies as a musical in my book.

I don't think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a brilliant choice for a charleston. You have whole musicals like Chicago where almost any song would work to a Charleston.

The Bee Gees for a salsa - no thanks. My Favourite Things I thought was a pretty childish choice - and then I saw what Mark was dancing too. They could have picked something from West Side Story or Hair or In The Heights for a Samba!

And A Whole New World...really?? Musicals are jam packed with love songs and that was the best choice for a Rumba? Also -don't hit me - not a huge fan of Singing In The Rain but it'll probably work fine for Susanna's quickstep.

Yes, that's how I remembered it from the documentary too - they showed that it wasn't her singing one of the slower songs, but I thought she still did a lot of it - but I could have misunderstood. Of course it was such a good irony because of the story of Singing in the Rain. Completely agree with you about the film, funny and brilliant, one of the greats. The first version of their film with sound makes me fall about laughing.

It's so bizarre that this series alone we've already had songs from Cabaret, The Pyjama Game and Hairspray, and then for musicals night we're getting Disney and Saturday Night Fever. Nothing against them as films, but for dancing from musicals they seem like a wasted opportunity.

I can't wait to see the costume summary - Sophie as a nun, Ashley as a genie, Mark as a lion and Aljaz as John Travolta. And after Pasha as Shrek, I'm really serious.

It crossed my mind that I bet none of the producers have ever thought to ask Dave Arch for some suggestions for music choices.
Given what we've come to expect from producers appearing on the "Points of View" programme, with their frequent condescending attitude of "we're right, the viewers wrong," it would come as no surprise to me.

After all "they're just the band," aren't they?
