Freesat to USB recording
webntweb
27-11-2013
Hi,

If I bought a Freeview HD tv with USB record to external hard drive facility, would I be able to record using an external Freesat box.
Do these tvs have a record button on the remote to record from the Freeview EPG. If this is how they record I can see the problem being that the Freesat remote wouldn't have a record button.

Whatever features your TV has doesn't affect any external box you connect.

If you connect a Freesat PVR it will come with it's own remote control, and will essentially just use the TV as a monitor.

ETA: Rereading your question it occurs to me that you might be asking if you can connect the Freesat PVR via USB to the TV?
The answer to that would be No.

If you can post the make and model of TV we can tell you more.

My TV can record Freeview to USB memory stick or hard drive, I can use the EPG or the record button on the remote.

The main problem is that it records using the Samsung hard drive format which can't be read by a PC, so you can only watch recordings on the TV.

The humax Freesat box can record to its own hard drive and then you can copy those recordings to an external hard drive to view on a PC, but HD recordings are encrypted.

I am looking at the Samsung T27B551EW which has two USB sockets one of which is two way and capable of recording to a hard drive through the on-board Freeview EPG.
I can't easily get a Freeview feed to this TV so I intend to use a Manhattan HD Freesat box.
I presume the remote supplied with the TV will have a record button. The Manhattan remote doesn't have a record button so I was really just wondering if anybody could think of a work round to record to an hard drive via the Freesat box.

If you want to record Freesat to a harddrive you need either a Freesat+ pvr with a built in hard disc or a single tuner pvr ready freesat box like the new Humax freetime box which use your own external hard disc.

Everything I have read about this TV suggests it can only record from it's internal Freeview tuner. It cannot record from external devices.

It certainly cannot use the EPG on your Freesat receiver to schedule recordings even if it could record external sources. The TV has no way to access the Freesat EPG on an external box. The best you can hope for is that the Freesat receiver can schedule programmes to watch and you can set up corresponding manual timers on the TV to record those programmes. But as the Samsung does not appear to allow recording from external sources it doesn't look like you even have that option.

So if you want to record Freesat programmes the only way you can do it with that TV appears to be to invest in a Freesat PVR.

Thanks for your replies folks. I will have a look at the Humax Freetime box.

If you are going to invest in a new box it might be worth looking at a PVR rather than bolting a hard drive onto a receiver.

For example

Depending on the abilities of the receiver you might not be able to record one channel while watching a different one at the same time. Something you will be able to do with the PVR. And you can record two channels at the same time with the PVR which again you might not be able to do with the receiver/hdd combo.

Yes that TV will only record Freeview to USB, not Freesat.

Plus the HD will be Samsung formatted so you will only be able to watch recordings on the TV, not save them to PC.

It is good for recording Freeview if you don't want to attach another box but no good if you want to save recordings for later.

I have a Topfield 5800 on my main Freeview TV which we use for recording. I will certainly look at a Freesat PVR but may go for the Freetime one just for recording the odd programme if I can find out if the Lacie 500Gb USB hard drive I already have is compatible.

That's good to know, I thought they had stopped it, but I haven't used Non Freesat mode for a while. Mainly because the recordings are too big for the file format so you have to go through all the palava of making the hard drive linux compatible.

The G2 boxes can use NTFS with external drives. The HB1000s will record to a ntfs drive. Not having one not sure if even SD recordings are usable on anything other than the box that recorded it, nor if it's even possible to record non-freesat.

Based on the twin tuner G2 models drm restrictions, it seems unlikely you can do anything with recordings at all made on a HB1000S.

As far as I am aware this only applies to the first generation Foxsat-HDR and only works after a reboot in non-freesat mode.

Last time I checked you can't record non-freesat at all using a HDR1000s.

In any case it's largely redundant on a Foxsat-hdr since Nowster invented a small patch you can apply if you have the Custom Firmware installed. After the patch Freesat mode recordings are mot encrypted. As a result you can then use the CF DLNA server to stream all recordings to other kit directly. Works great with my Nexus 7 tablet.
