How popular will they remain and does anybody see a price cut to maybe 99 in the new year?

Very popular for a good while yet. Just upgraded to an Xbox slim myself from an old 250 gig Xbox and still quite happy with 360 atm.

Cant see them going that low at retail but you can get decent bundles for between 160 - 200.

Current gen will be supported for a lot longer than the previous gens but support will dwindle over time.

Lest use FIFA as an example.

Put it this way, FIFA 14 is essentially the same on PS3 and PS4 but when FIFA15 comes around then you will notice small differences. (specials/graphics etc that only available on PS4 rather than PS3) then FIFA 16 will be a huge difference between the two.

Just look at FIFA 14 thats available on PS3 and PS2, the differences are noticable.

There a lot of life in the old dogs and game devs will continue to make games until it stops being profitable but obviously focus is now being moved to the next gen.

If your asking will PS3 / Xbox360 still be around in 5 years then I would have to say yes but will they have the same consumer base as they currently have right now then the answer has to be no.

If you wait 12-18 months till upgrading then you will not only get the same great games at a cheaper price but also when you do upgrade you will have a good back catalogue to work through as well.

Plenty of games will still be developed. They aren't going anywhere soon.

Any games multi-player based will die off pretty quick, but they tend to anyway whenever a new game is released.

At the moment I actually don't think the games released are particularly must haves, but I thought that about the games released for the launch of the last gen.

Id say the PS3 has another 2-3 years before games begging to die down and focus turns to PS4. The PS3 will always have support i think just not as huge.

I say 2015 till you start seeing most yearly titles, major franchise go PS4/XBO only. By 2016 you probably see very few last gen games.

What be more interesting when do people think the online services/ game servers etc start to be shut down on the consoles. Is Xbox live network on 360 the same network as the one ? Or will be shut down ? Same goes for PS3 PSN.

My PS3 will remain popular due to PS+. So many games still to play, and for free.

GT6 is also coming out next friday too.

I don't know how long MS or Sony will support 'last gen' consoles. They could make all their 'first party' games exclusive to their new consoles, leaving gamers with little choice but to upgrade or go without.

Last time around, MS more or less dropped the original Xbox like a bad habit.

Yes, it died much sooner than the PS2 and even Gamecube I believe, despite being the most powerful. However, it was never truly successful in the way the 360 was in the current gen. The PS2 won the previous gen battle by a long way.

IMHO Microsoft would be very foolish to drop the 360 as quickly as they did the Xbox and it would only serve to annoy 360 owners and push them towards PS4 rather than XBone. I think the 360 will enjoy support for a good few years yet but likely not as long as PS3 as Sony has an excellent track record of supporting their older consoles even well into the next generation, plus the PS3 launched over a year later so technically isn't as old as the 360 either.

That's one of the factors in me moving from Xbox to Playstation last generation. It wasn't all MS fault if I remember rightly as they got screwed by Nvidia but rather than taking the hit MS decided to screw their customers who had supported them in their first step into the console business. This is one of the reason I look so badly toward MS as I was left with no supported consoles for nearly a year because I couldn't afford to upgrade at the time.

I am pretty sure both PS3 and 360 will be supported for a while yet. The quality of games released will diminish over time as the target audience changes as more people upgrade to Xbox 1 and PS4.

Persona 5 looks like it is a PS3 exclusive which means I'll be keeping mine and it will sell shitloads in Japan.

Incidentally the PSP is still doing decent business in Japan both on hardware and sales. Not spectacular but steady.

I won't be buying a PS4 for at least a year - money - and there are still PS3 games I want to play.

Having PS+ for my PS4 will mean getting free stuff on PS3 still, which someone mentioned somewhere else, which i hadn't thought of before. But its a good reason to keep the PS3 and is valid on xbox too, so i dont reckon the PS3/360 are going anywhere for a while.

I've got a PS4 but my PS3 isn't going anywhere yet.

If I get my own way I'll be keeping the 3, the 4 and the Vita. However my other half wants the 3 sold. We'll see how it goes I guess.

For me the 3 is established. It's still not outdated and produces great graphics, sound and gameplay. It's not to be binned just because the 4 came out.

I love my 4. It's a better console no doubt, but the 3 is fantastic in it's own way and will sell still for a few years yet. Cost is a big thing. How many will shell out 300-400 for ps4 when 200 will get you a 3 with a number of games.

With games being around 50 a time for the 4 the 3 will be cheaper to get games for. Add to that the accessories that work with the 3 that don't with the 4. People spend money on accessories, if they don't work on the 4 it may put some people off for now. I'm still gutted my official wireless ps headset doesn't work with my 4. Even though it's coming soon in an update it's crap playing without them at present.

Another benefit is my essential plus subscription on the 4 is pumping out plenty of games for my vita and 3 with only 2 so far for the 4. Another benefit of the 3.

I have 4 games for my 4. I have around 15 on the 3 and 5 on the vita.

GTA on the 3 is another reason the 3 is staying. With rockstar being tight lipped on a 4 launch I can't sell the 3 yet as I want to keep playing.

Both sony and ms will support both consoles for at least another couple of years. Both consoles have a massive following and would be foolish to scrap support as quick as ms did with the original xbox.

MS have already dropped the 360. You only need to look at this chart to see who is still committed to their last-gen console:
