I have always wondered this, especially characters that are supposed to still live in the same town or city. take the jackson family as a perfect example they only moved to south london in the late 90s so surely they most likely popped back from time to time during the years they were not around and take sonia for example she lives in dagenham so surely she must visit her family from time to time on weekends for example, i just think soaps should mention things like this often for example none of the cast members appear in every single episode so when they do return after a week or so, they can simply mention things like it was nice having sonia and chloe visit us or people like denise can say it was nice having libby or chelsea visit us. what do you guys think?

I know, it's like as soon as someone leaves they cut off the family for good. I've heard phone calls mentioned before, but never visits. Weird.

Doesn't Honey from EE pop back offscreen and give the kids to Billy? I'm sure it's been mentioned before that she does.

That's not really relevant...

Current soap characters go to visit past soap characters all the time. The OP is asking of past soap characters come back to visit off screen.

Mike Barnes used to come and see Amy and the Kids off screen, I rememeber she used to say dad will be here in a minute and wave them off then shut the door quickly, you know so it would apear like he had just been

The question is meaningless, as there is no "off-screen" in soap operas. If you don't see it or hear it, it doesn't happen. (The OP does know that soaps are not fly-on-the-wall documentaries, right?)

Makes me laugh when they have people returning who would have realistically still been in touch over the phone or whatever but it's almost like they ceased existing because they have to be caught up on every tiny little detail.

What?! Don't talk nonsense - hundreds of things happen "off-screen" in soap operas and always have done. We don't see every single minute of every single day. Unless you're telling me no soap character goes to the toilet.

Haha good point - they always mention "She's gone to visit X" or "Y phoned earlier today" but never "X came over for a cuppa this afternoon!"

It's always made me wonder why they bother having "leaving stories" when characters go on a few months break. Couldn't they just continue as normal, with the characters just being referred to instead of shown?

Wow! Calm down I was only saying. The OP asked a question that can be answered! No one said it was a 'flu-on-the-wall documentary' so where have you got that from.

Also, 'if we don't see it, it doesn't happen' what the hell is that about! Things happen to characters off screen and the talk about it on screen. Just because they don't film it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Yes it's not real we know it's fiction but they show couples kissing, a few weeks later te woman's pregnant, but I guess cause we never seen it happen the woman magically beamed pregnant!

It's easier just to imagine they do, there wouldn't be any point in mentioning it. My bigger issue is with relatives that appear to cease existing!

Alice's Mum in EE, no sign of her despite Alice growing up with her until last year. Michael Moon, none of his siblings or Father at his funeral and no Moons at Alfie's wedding………really? Is Spencer dead?
