FWIW I measured my Toppy during various power states:
HDD spinning or active 24W
HDD spun down 16W
Standby 16W.

It was just was of those simple Maplin meters rather than any sophisticated lab kit but it gives an idea. It looks like shutting the disk down actually saves the most power.

Aside - please add my vote to making the table intelligible with Firefox?

It would be really useful to collect the power consumption of all the machines. Perhaps the maximum and then the consumption in stand-by. I guess most of this data is published in the manuals.

Where a machine has a big saving in stand-by then coming out of stand-by to record is a really useful feature. Although 16 watts in standby is still a fair bit - 140kWH over a year just in standby, releasing 70 kg of the green house gas carbon dioxide.

OK, well just to note that all the Fusion 1xx/2xx machines seem to consume about 22-23W all the time, no change going to standby - as the hard drive never stops spinning.

The Technotrend (Technosonic/Tevion) twin tuner PVR's have the following power consumption. Operational (as quoted in the manual) <16W. With the HDD drive run-down (normal condition unless required for recording, Timeslip or playback) approx 6W. In standby also approx 6W. The latter values were measured by a User and details posted in the Technosonic threads.

At the moment some people leave their Humax on overnight so that the EPG is always fully populated. Proably better to use a wakeup timer but anyway...

...Probably not one for the table, but out of interest anyhow, I was wondering what the power consumtion would be if the humax was on but not buffering a channel, like if you go into the menus or leave on a channel not on air (part time channel). Given that people seem to be saying that without buffering or recording the power consumption is reduced by quite a lot. Is there are owner ale to test this sort of thing?

I red some where that the Humax as now got a fan installed is this correct?
I’ve looked on the comparison site it says not .Thinking of getting one for a bedroom: bit of a problem if its got a fan. Chris

Hi Chris, the humax has a fan but its the quiet type - you cant hear it unless you put your ear to the machine. Having said that there were 3 users who all had a noisy unit so there may be a noisy batch so beware. Take it back if thats the case as everyone else is still getting the quiet PVRs. If you are going to buy a PVR why dont you get the Tevion which is being put out in Aldis today for £99. You need to be quick because they will probably sell out very quickly - would be a shame to miss out. If there is a problem with it you can take it back to the shop. See the thread a few lines below.

I've just been looking at the table, and I'm at a loss to know what "R" (green) and "T" (in red) mean in the main features tables. It doesn't make sense, and there's no key anywhere.

It exposes your choice of browser . In Explorer it shows correctly as a cross and a tick, but the more discerning browsers (Netscape, Firefox) don't seem to be able to display the correct symbols for it, just the equivalent letter in the symbol table.

I think its the way the excel table conmverts to html. Somehow i think Microsoft are bending the rules when it comes to html/web standards - my hunch not knowing much about these things. I have made a second copy with something that has crosses and ticks in Firefox. The overwhelming majority of visitors seem to be from Internet explorer browsers but there are a lot of Firefox browsers connecting though and also opera to a lesser extent. See link at top of the comparison page.

Well, the alternative version has square root symbols and crosses, which is an improvement.

Excel isn't a web design tool. Microsoft shouldn't pretend it is.

Oh, well there you are then, mine's 5.5 I think or thereabouts. Shows how often I use it.

For the record it shows a green tick in a green box, and a red cross in a slightly smaller box.

Incidently the star symbols at the page bottom also show as accented 'e's in Netscape, but ok in ie5.5. The alternate view is fine in any.

I've just bought a Grundig twin tuner 80gb PVR. Seems to be cloned with Proline/Matsui models as all front face controls are in identical positions albeit with slightly different buttons. Can I post details for the comparison list?
