Here's the answer you're after...

I've just joined from Orange and so far it's been very liberating.

There you go, they have grown a lot as the article says.

The article is out of date already as they now supply handsets not in the coming months.

The article was published two weeks ago. It's not *that* out of date as far as customer numbers go.

Yes, aside from going door-to-door it's good enough to answer the OP's question accurately enough.

I just wonder how accurate those figures are for any network and in particular when quoting PAYG customers.

I have countless number of PAYG sims (2 for GiffGaff) that are only kept alive by a single text every 3 months and in reality I’ve got one sim in daily use and a data sim in weekly use for the others there like in standby mode but still count as a customer for the relevant network.

The last set of official giffgaff customer numbers are for 31 Dec 2012 when they had 793,979. This was an increase of 532,029 over the year. Given their growth it's probably reasonable to assume they passed 1 million at some point this year as the Telegraph article suggests.
