BT put in new fibre cabinets about a year ago all around my area but scanning the wi-fi airwaves locally shows most people to be on Sky or TalkTalk.
I am just over a mile from our local exchange & download speeds are about 8mb via copper which is sufficient for most things including catch up TV etc so I suspect its only people with slow ADSL further away from the exchange & hard core downloaders that will pay the premium for fibre.
Cheap bundles seem to be getting most customers..

Sky and talk talk also provide fibre to the cabinet. They're just a bit cheaper that's all.

As been said, other ISP's offer FTTC as well, so those people who have Sky or Talk Talk could be using FTTC.

But take up for FTTC have not been great, certainly slower than what BT thought it would be. I suppose it depends on the area you are in and what speed people can get on ADSL. I know a few people who are happy with what they get on ADSL and don't see the need to spend extra on getting faster speeds they don't require.

I also know that take up around where I am is not too bad as ADSL is pretty naff around here, so going from 3Mb/s or so to around 30 or more is pretty good. Even so there are some who are happy with their 3Mb/s and have no need for anything faster.


Money is getting tight for a lot of people and broadband is one of those things that will be cut to save money.


If I did not have the service I have got, I am not sure if I would be on FTTC or not. I was happy with ADSL24, the main reasons i moved to where I am now is because.

All pay is a small local company
I could get a couple of megabits more on a stable connection for less money.

Then there people like me who want FTTC but cannot due to having an EO direct line

I live in a cabled area and it's mixed between BT, Virgin and TalkTalk/Sky

Just be thankful you get Fibre. I'm in a new build house and we don't have access to any fibre services like BT, Virgin Media, and the only broadband services available to us are BT and plusnet.

Can't even get Sky Broadband. I've asked and asked and asked BT to upgrade our nearest exchange but I doubt it will happen.

I live slap bang between two exchanges, the one to the east is accepting orders for fibre services, the one to the west is still under evaluation.

Guess which one I come under........?

Unlimited BT infinity 1 - £23
Sky fibre unlimited - £20

Basically it depends on the package.
