Greatest Christmas Song?
It's funny for me because I'm generally pretty old-fashioned about these things but I don't really like a lot of old christmas songs. So often they're rather dreary. As for my favourites:
Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues I Beleive In Father Christmas - Greg Lake Lonely This Christmas - Mud Sleigh Ride - The Ronettes version 2000 Miles - The Pretenders Il Dulci Jubilo - Mike Oldfield version Stop The Cavalry - Jona Lewie Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade Happy Xmas - John Lennon Do They Know It's Christmas - Jona Lewie At a push I'd probably go with Il Dulci Jubilo over Fairytale Of New York as the best. |

If you include carols then it would have to be Silent Night. I've always loved Oh Holy Night too.
Otherwise another for Fairytale Of New York. |

Driving home for Christmas by Chris Rea is my favourite.
I also love fairytale of New York, mostly for Kirsty McColl rather than the pogues though. |

To me, the best song ever written is "Fall Softly Snow" from Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius.
God bless you and them always!!! ![]() Holly |

Mariah Carey- all I Want for christmas Is You
To my mind the last truly great christmas song that is worthy to go into the Christmas classic cannon

"Wombling Merry Christmas" is far and away the most Christmassy Christmas song and it never gets played!

For something a bit different, I'd recommend The December People
http://powerofprog.com/notes/Decembe...tle_%26_Humbug www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6PQjeNXvy8 or alternatively, The Albion Christmas Band http://www.folkrootslist.co.uk/2013/...-celebrations/ I'm going to see them in Southport on 20th December - they're great. |

If we are mentioning specific versions then I think this Oh Holy Night by Mario Lanza takes some beating http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxUkjthYAR4

Of the oldies I like all the 60s girl group ones like the Ronettes, Darlene Love, Crystals etc.....the Phil Spector ones
I'm bored with the 70s standards, Slade, Wizard, Mud etc.....overkill I stopped listening to pop music about early 80s so I think of anything from then onwards as 'new'......and the new ones I like are Wham's Last Christmas and Mariah 'All I Want For Christmas is You'.......but obviously there'll be loads from the last 30 years that I've never heard Of the ones that have been linked to on here recently I like the Leona Lewis one |
