weird early upgrade offer from 3
spaceman05

Hi, I am with 3, still got nearly 6 months of a 24 month contract to run, received a text from them, informing me they are currently running a early upgrade offer as long as I resign a 24 month contract, so went into my nearest 3 store to find out what the deal is, to be told I would have to pay around £180 which is what I owe to the end of the current contract(the advisor advised me I could trade in my current mobile with mazooma or somebody similar to help pay the balance) so then I asked the advisor what the actual offer for upgrading early was then, as I could pay off the balance anytime during my contract if I so wished, so they asked me what phone I was thinking of upgrading to, so I said maybe the iphone 5c, so he told me the offer would be instead of paying the £49 handset fee upfront, they would just spread it over the course of the contract, so taking the one plan iphone tariff from £41 to £43 per month, again am I being stupid, cant really see how they can class that as an offer?

They can't class that as an offer as all the early upgrade is doing is getting you to part with more money earlier to buy yourself out of your current contract so you can get an iPhone 5C earlier.

You are definitely not being stupid and for 3 to call it an 'early upgrade' is stupid as you could do that at any point in your contract and there is no incentive given by 3 to make it worth your while.

Most networks do offer an early upgrade as in within X months of the end of your contract you can upgrade by extending your contract by 24 months without paying off the remainder of your existing contract.

Yeah, as an example, Vodafone let me upgrade my phone 2 months before the end of my contract, as long as I signed on for another 24 months after the end of my contract. I didn't have to pay a termination fee.

What made it even worse was when he was looking up my details he asked me if I still had the Samsung Galaxy Note that I originally took the contract out with and I replied yes, so he looked on mazuma and told me that I would get £150 from them for trading it in, in effect only leaving me to find around £30 to pay off my excisting contract,I politely declined the offer at that time, and went home, once I got home I checked for myself to find infact I would only get £80 for my phone, would not have been best pleased if I had been impulsive and signed up there and then for it, even better he must have checked the trade in price for the note 2, as hat was £150, erm I am 19 months into a 24 month contract, I would expect a mobile phone salesperson to know that the Note 2 was not out 19 Months ago.

Be wary of this as I have read on the VF site forums that the 24 months new contract is ADDED to your remaining time.... so in your case 26 months.

I heard this as well and other companies do the same so each time ou do an early upgrade your contract length gets longer and longer.

Umm your contract length stays exactly the same. You're just getting a new phone sooner. That's it. Nothing else changes compared to getting an upgrade the day your existing contract expires. If you did the latter your contract would be renewed for exactly the same length of time.

Which if you had read his post your would see is exactly what xreyuk123 said to begin with.

How does that work? You early upgrade because you can up to 3 months before and that gets added to your next contract, but you can only upgrade 3 months before on the next one not 6. It doesn't build up over time as far as I know.

You're right it doesn't.

Although you do sometimes have to watch out for 3's dirty selling of a second contract instead of upgrading your current one.

Presumably the dirty part it where they hold them to ransom with guns and force people to agree?

Or do people choose to take out a 2nd contract when offered one?

Most likely NOT actually Three doing that of course, but rather a company claiming to be Three in some way?

So the 3 store he went into was not a real 3 store?

Yes it is.

I was making people aware, that under certain circumstances the networks dont start the customer off with a new 24 month contract, they add the 24 months to whats remaining on their existing contract.

It does happen.... the VF boards have had many a post on there in the past years about the very same.

Obviouly it didnt happen with the poster (xreuk123) but it can happen....I thought I was making myself clear, obviously not.

Too be honest, with the Charlaton that I had the misfortune of dealing with I did think about looking up at the sign on the way out just to make sure

People are lied to and told it's an upgrade to their current contract, while they are in fact signed up for a second contract with a different number.

Seen a few complaints about it on the internet, also known a few friends who've been mis-sold the same "deal". Took a few months of wrangling with the exec's office just to cancel the unwanted contract.

But that's how all networks have always done it, and also what everyone else has been saying they do - I don't see your point?

You're suggesting 3 customer services are just a company claiming to be Three in some way?

I'd sure hope they were...

Just a quick update, I emailed David Dyson's office, partly to find out if the offer that the sales assistant told me was indeed correct, and partly to complain about the the sales assistant misleading me about how much I would get for my phone if I traded it in, got a callback yesterday and what the sales assistant failed to tell me at the time was that if I paid the rest of my contract off I would not have had to pay vat(so saving 20% off the total), and also there would also be a further reduction of another 20% for paying it off early, so saving 40% off the bill, which took it down from the £180 he quoted me to £92(a payment has since left my account) so the 40% would have been saved against £148, the guy aksed me what he could do to rectify things and I said nothing I was happy with that, so long I knew what the offer was, but as a goodwill gesture he dropped the Early Termination Fee completely leaving me free to upgrade, so I am now a owner of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 which I got free
