METRIC - Why Aren't They Popular Over Here?

I loved the band Metric for years. Not sure how you'd classify them, music wise - sort of alternative rock, really but their songs can still sound quite poppy at times too, and are very melodic, and I love the retro sound they have. Basically I can't really pigeonhole them and that's good! Emily Haines' voice is exquisite and perfect for the type of music they make.

Here's one of my favourite songs of theirs, Monster Hospital:

another fave, I.O.U.:

Another, Gimme Sympathy:

Combat Baby:

Gold Gun Girls:

and a recent one, Synthetica:

If you're not familar with this great band check out these videos, they'll give you a good idea of what they'd done over the years. LOVE THIS BAND!

If they were going to make it it would have been around the time of "Live It Out" as they had a bit of publicity and gigged a lot over here.

It wasn't to be so I doubt they'll ever do much here.

I've seen them live several times and they've always been decent. Emily Haines solo album sucks the big one mind you!

Nice to see at least one other person has heard of them here, lol! It's such a shame they've never taken off here. But everything just seems to be about generic dance and rap these days, a band like Metric don't really get a look in when it comes to commercial success! Ah well. I guess Metric should have been around in the early 90's!

As I don't listen to music radio much these days, I'm mostly introduced to bands I don't know through TV and film soundtracks, so the first Metric song I heard was Eclipse (All Yours). spaceygal, I think you're right, just unlucky to be around at the wrong time.

Cool! I really like them. Not sure if they're that popular in the US either. They have some fans, but they've never really made it to the level they should.

I like them, they're one of a number of Canadian "indie" bands who all seem to hang around together/record with each other etc so I first came across them from following other bands like Broken Social Scene and Stars.

But most of these Canadian bands seem to be really popular in their homeland but have little profile or recognition outside it for whatever reason, I've seen them all on the occasions they've toured the UK but it was always in pretty tiny venues.

They've done some great stuff over the years though!

They seem to be gathering more fans over there though as their last album, Synthetica, made number 12 on the US chart.

I like them - but their last album was weak. Felt like they'd found a winning formula with 'Fantasies' and tried to repeat the trick, but it just felt more like a bunch of songs that didn't make the cut - 'Fantasies - B-sides' if you like.

Prefer Stars and New Pornographers for Canadian indie bands with a (sometimes) female singers.

Great news! I used to live in the US, haven't lived there for awhile. When I lived there they weren't so well known but guess they are becoming better known there now. I just read that they opened for Paramore on their last tour so I guess that is increasing their profile and audience in the US.

I first came across Metric when 'Black Sheep' was used in the Scott Pilgrim vs the world film and have been hooked since. The acoustic version of Gimme Sympathy has to be one of my top 10 favorite songs.

I agree with others that now isn't really the time for their sort of music. It's such a shame really. Maybe if they can get on a few more film soundtracks...

I actually discovered Metric by accident when I played one of their songs on YouTube mistaking their name for Muse. Really liked their music.

EDIT: Just remembered the name of the song was Sick Muse, explains why it came up with Muse in the search results

I like the behind-the-scenes of the Gimme Sympathy video. Shows how it's all one shot.

I loved their song is Scott Pilgrim. I didn't release they were a proper band though, I would have checked them out earlier and this is totally my sort of music.

I once saw them accidentally at the Wireless Festival many moons ago. I don't remember much of their performance and there was barely anybody in the crowd at the time... Yep, that's my story.

On another note, I do like Monster Hospital.
