I think there are currently 2 excellent comedies on our screens whos respective formats would lend themselves excellently to Christmas Specials

The first, and I may have mentioned this before, is REV (around the true meaning of Christmas). The second is the quite brilliant 'Friday Night Dinners' (I'll let you guess the plot)
You may be interested to learn that Rev. and Friday Night Dinner have both already had Christmas specials. I hope we get another FND Xmas special this year. Tom Hollander and Olivia Colman are so busy right now that I very much doubt we'll be getting another Rev. Xmas special

Believe it or not, the monty python live was on french tv in english, with french subtitles when i was on holiday there last week. Would be an excellent option for christmas TV. (although having already seen it, would be great to watch it without the distraction of the subtitles!)

Christmas TV will be the same this year as it always is. That is to say largely awful. Endless nostalgia baiting retrospectives on Morecambe and Wise (which will be repeats themselves)with a few M&W eps on BBC2 which everyone has seen a thousand times, and knows the dialogue parrot fashion. There will be the usual couple of CGI animations on BBC1 on Xmas Day afternoon. There will probably be no big sitcom, or comedy show, which in the past was filled by The Two Ronnies, Only Fools and Horses, The Royal Family, One Foot in the Grave etc. 'Mrs Brown's Boys' will be shown instead, which I hate. There will be the films that have become a joke because they are ALWAYS shown ie Mary Poppins, Miracle on 34th St, The Wizard of OZ.etc. And of course the BBC will display a tepid effort at making their idents look 'festive'.

I for one, will be giving TV a rather wide berth over the Xmas period. Although they MIGHT show a classic Disney that is not often broadcast, like they have for the past 2 years ( Lady and the Tramp & Fantasia) other than that, forget it.

Sorry mate, but I think you're far off the mark here. Christmas Eve especially is totally unlikely. I would go with this:

CHRISTMAS EVE:

6.20 Film: Toy Story 3
8.00 EastEnders
8.30 Would I Lie to You
9.00 Miranda (part 1 of 2)
9.30 Not Going Out (Last ever episode)
10.15 The Royle Family (Barbara's Old Ring)
11.15 BBC News
11.35 Midnight Mass

CHRISTMAS DAY:

3.10 Esio Trot
4.40 BBC News
4.50 Strictly Come Dancing
6.00 Call The Midwife
7.15 Doctor Who
8.15 EastEnders
9.15 Open All Hours (New Series)
9.45 Miranda (2 of 2)
10.15 Mrs. Brown's Boys (1 of 2)
10.50 BBC News
11.00 On Christmas Night
11.10 Film: The Aviator

BOXING DAY:

5.30 Film: Puss in Boots
7.00 The Boy in a Dress
8.00 EastEnders
8.30 Tumble Christmas Special (if popular enough)
9.30 Mrs. Brown's Boys (2 of 2)
10.00 BBC News
10.20 Match of the Day

In what ways do you think I'm "far off the mark", if you don't mind my asking?

As we all know claires_dad very kindly holds a "Guess the Cover Design Competition" which we all enjoy entering.

But, between now and then is a period of boring anticipation and nothingness. It's your fault claires_dad, you run the competition far too well!

So, I decided to run a Christmas Quiz based on Radio Times entries from the past. Each week I will ask ten questions. If you PM me with your answers, at the end of each week I will gather up your answers and officially announce that week's winner. The questions will be asked each week until W/E 12/10/14. The person(s) who wins overall by gaining more points will win a copy of my poetry book called "A Gift For Christmas".

(Rules will be explained later).

So, without further ado, here are the first ten questions:

1: In what year did ITV trounce BBC1 on Christmas Night by showing Raiders of the Lost Ark?

2: What was BBC1's opposition to that movie on the same night?

3: In 1974, BBCtv received complaints about their Christmas Day schedule. Can you tell me why?

4: What was significant about BBC2's Christmas night offering in 1993 at 9.15pm?

5: BBC1 has traditionally shown animated movies on Christmas afternoon after the Queen's speech for several years now. But, what was the year that the run of animation movies began?

6: Before the run of animated movies started, can you name the afternoon movie in the year preceeding it?

7: What famous musical received its television premiere on Christmas Day 1975 and received the exact same slot two years later in 1977?

8: 1981 was considered a relatively poor Christmas on BBC1. But they had one main event with the premiere of Gone With The Wind. But, what classic sci-fi movie received its television premiere on BBC1 on New Year's Day 1982?

9: What classic television drama was shown on BBC2 on Christmas Day 1975?

10: What year did the Radio Times release its first double issue?

There you go. The first ten questions.

RULES:

Only one entry per person per week. Multiple entries will be ignored and only the first entry honoured.
The person with the most correct will be announced every Sunday from August 24th 2014. Answers will be given every Sunday morning from August 24 2014. . The weekly winner will receive 5 points. The person who comes second will get 3 points and the person who comes third will get 1 point. The person with the most points at the end of the Quiz which will end on Saturday 12th October, will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the names will be put into a hat and the overall winner selected randomly, but only if there are more than two winners.
Please PM me your answers. It will invalidate any entry if you reveal the answers publicly as you could be enabling others to see the answers too.

GAINING POINTS

To gain points you need to enter the competition frequently. You will not be considered a winner with 5 points if you only entered once. You do not have to enter every week. The weekly winner will get 5 points. The person who comes 2nd gets 3 points and the person in third place gets 1 point. If there are more people who come 2nd than third, then all those will score 3 points and the third place ranking will be disregarded in any particular week that this occurs.

Any other issues, please feel free to PM me and I will do my best to answer them.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Last Tango won't finish on Christmas Eve this year as its a Wednesday. Would I Lie To You is too early at 7.30pm. They will likely keep Open All Hours for Christmas Day.

Fair enough but considering how well Last Tango did on Xmas Eve last year, it wouldn't surprise me if the BBC gave it another Xmas Eve outing this year, either in the form of the series finale or a stand-alone Xmas special. Doctor Who and Strictly are Saturday shows but their Xmas specials go out on Xmas Day whichever day it falls on. You may have a point about WILTY? being too early at 7.30 but I can't think what else they could put there which would hold its own against Coro St. The premiere of Shrek beat the Xmas Eve showing of Coro St back in 2004 but that was ten years ago now so I'm not sure if a film premiere could deliver the goods these days and even if it could the BBC don't really have a film that can premiere this year that is of the caliber which could deliver the goods. And while they might want Open All Hours on Xmas Day, I don't think they have the room because the schedule is so packed. You'd have to cut Miranda or Mrs Brown's Boys to 30 mins. to fit all three in on Xmas Day

If you use Claires_dad's website, you might be able to find several of the answers out. Virtually all the answers are on that website, it's just a matter of researching a bit! Have a go!

Oh OK, fair enough. The last time I was on there (which was probably back in December) the new site was missing C5 listings for those three years

You know what you're right, don't know why but those years didn't transfer across! Looks like I have some work to do.
