Yep, just read that in Radio Times' interview with James Corden.

They've made two 1 hour episodes although Corden does say he "thinks" they'll be shown at Christmas.

Claires_dad, I noticed on your brilliant site, your forthcoming Christmas 2014 list of shows has inadvertently forgotten Esio Trot for BBC1.

I've been unable to find any official confirmation of this, the only links I've found all say it was to be shown last year (which it wasn't obviously!)

Perhaps you can point me in the right direction?

Happy to oblige.

And the next link confirms that it is now in post-production. (June 2014)

Thanks I knew it was being made but couldn't find a link to say that it would definitely have a Christmas showing, which only the Tuppence Magazine link seems to mention but only says "expected" for Christmas so not confirmation as yet.

No worries. If I find a link confirming a Christmas showing, I'll post it. By the way, that Jonathan Strange programme is a 7 part series. Not sure if it's being shown at Christmas. It's amazing that there's so much stuff to find room for!

I guess we'll have to see how the beeb schedule everything this year. It will probably be starting around Christmastime in that case! It doesn't sound particularly "magical" though does it? It's set in an alternate England during Napoleonic times and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell are working on a project for the Government!

There was also a report somewhere (I'll try and find it) that the 3 part "Casual Vacancy" by J.K. Rowling was going to be airing at Christmas too! Can you ever recall a recent time when BBC1 seemed to have a very full bag of potential Christmas dramas?

Finally something that actually interests me:

Quote:
“Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror will return to Channel 4 later this year for a Christmas special.

The feature-length one-off will be titled 'Yuletide' and will see three interwoven stories come together, according to Radio Times.

Brooker, the creator and head writer of the series, said: "I always enjoy a good ghost story at Christmas, and I'm a sucker for the Amicus' compendium horror movies of the '70s. Our aim is to create the Black Mirror equivalent of that."

Channel 4's head of comedy Phil Clarke added: "I'm delighted that we have a Black Mirror special this Christmas.

"Charlie Brooker has penned a dystopian future festive tale, that intertwines three stories to deliver a dramatic and thrilling twist. It's satirical, comic, disturbing, and thought-provoking. Not to be missed."

As reported earlier this year, a full series comprised of the traditional three episodes is still in line to follow the Christmas special in 2015. ”

But, between now and then is a period of boring anticipation and nothingness. It's your fault claires_dad, you run the competition far too well!

So, I decided to run a Christmas Quiz based on Radio Times entries from the past. Each week I will ask ten questions. If you PM me with your answers, at the end of each week I will gather up your answers and officially announce that week's winner. The questions will be asked each week until W/E 12/10/14. The person(s) who wins overall by gaining more points will win a copy of my poetry book called "A Gift For Christmas".

(Rules will be explained later).

So, without further ado, here are the first ten questions:

1: In what year did ITV trounce BBC1 on Christmas Night by showing Raiders of the Lost Ark?

2: What was BBC1's opposition to that movie on the same night?

3: In 1974, BBCtv received complaints about their Christmas Day schedule. Can you tell me why?

4: What was significant about BBC2's Christmas night offering in 1993 at 9.15pm?

5: BBC1 has traditionally shown animated movies on Christmas afternoon after the Queen's speech for several years now. But, what was the year that the run of animation movies began?

6: Before the run of animated movies started, can you name the afternoon movie in the year preceeding it?

7: What famous musical received its television premiere on Christmas Day 1975 and received the exact same slot two years later in 1977?

8: 1981 was considered a relatively poor Christmas on BBC1. But they had one main event with the premiere of Gone With The Wind. But, what classic sci-fi movie received its television premiere on BBC1 on New Year's Day 1982?

9: What classic television drama was shown on BBC2 on Christmas Day 1975?

10: What year did the Radio Times release its first double issue?

There you go. The first ten questions.

RULES:

Only one entry per person per week. Multiple entries will be ignored and only the first entry honoured.
The person with the most correct will be announced every Sunday from August 24th 2014. Answers will be given every Sunday morning from August 24 2014. . The weekly winner will receive 5 points. The person who comes second will get 3 points and the person who comes third will get 1 point. The person with the most points at the end of the Quiz which will end on Saturday 12th October, will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the names will be put into a hat and the overall winner selected randomly, but only if there are more than two winners.
Please PM me your answers. It will invalidate any entry if you reveal the answers publicly as you could be enabling others to see the answers too.

GAINING POINTS

To gain points you need to enter the competition frequently. You will not be considered a winner with 5 points if you only entered once. You do not have to enter every week. The weekly winner will get 5 points. The person who comes 2nd gets 3 points and the person in third place gets 1 point. If there are more people who come 2nd than third, then all those will score 3 points and the third place ranking will be disregarded in any particular week that this occurs.

Any other issues, please feel free to PM me and I will do my best to answer them.

Good luck, and enjoy!”

Round One of the quiz closes at midnight tonight guys! Answers and this week's top 3 entrants will be revealed in the morning. Your last chance this week to enter!

2: What was BBC1's opposition to that movie on the same night? A 'Just Good Friends Feature Length Special followed by The Two Ronnies.

3: In 1974, BBCtv received complaints about their Christmas Day schedule. Can you tell me why? They showed 'True Grit' and 'Bridge On The River Kwai' which many viewers deemed inappropriate for Christmas Day.

4: What was significant about BBC2's Christmas night offering in 1993 at 9.15pm?
There are two correct answers here. One which I researched and an additional one which some entrants answered. The one that some entrants gave is that it was the first time Anthony Hopkins and his daughter appeared on screen together. The second answer is that according to the ratings, it received a zero score, meaning that officially, nobody watched it! Either answer was accepted.

5: BBC1 has traditionally shown animated movies on Christmas afternoon after the Queen's speech for several years now. But, what was the year that the run of animation movies began? 2005

6: Before the run of animated movies started, can you name the afternoon movie in the year preceeding it? 102 Dalmations in 2004

7: What famous musical received its television premiere on Christmas Day 1975 and received the exact same slot two years later in 1977? The Wizard of Oz

Charlie Higson was just on Richard Bacon’s show on 5live and confirmed that he’s written a one off hour long special based on the Professor Branestawm books which is currently filming and is to be broadcast on BBC1 Christmas day.

I haven’t heard of the books before but here they are:
