BIB- I do know this but it's just a great thing to have a #1, great for confidence and great for the X Factor collages

I know that overall success is a key thing too. For instance, BSE was not #1 but hung around for ever.

I Just want it all.

It may be that they were strongly encouraged to release an upbeat track as their lead and the freebie release of 'Fireproof' was a smart compromise to cushion the blow of any suggestion that they and their next album were not likely to be about credible music.

I'm glad they chose SMG as their lead single and not Fireproof. Even though it sounds a bit over-produced, it's a grower in my opinion. I very much liked Fireproof on first listen, but got tired of it fairly quickly. Still enjoying SMG a lot!

Fireproof doesn't have enough 'bang' to be a lead single. I'm not sure SMG is lead single material either. If it's supposed to give a sign of what the album is going to be like it's sort of 'more of the same' - it would have fitted alongside Why Don't We Go There and Alive on MM. It's big and catchy though which LWWY and BSE were.

The X Factor performance will help SMG sales hugely. I'd like to see them get another #1, it's been a while. Nicki is popular in the UK and her song is really fun - it's on the Capital FM playlist.

I wonder what the boys are going to perform around album release. They're doing promo in America where SMG will have been out 7 weeks already (6 weeks was the gap between LWWY and Little Things). Similarly they are rumoured to be performing on some European TV shows (e.g. Swedish Pop Idol) in December and Steal My Girl will be old by then so let's hope they have a 2nd single teed up. They can give SMG a final outing at the EMAs on 9th Nov (if they are indeed performing) then do what they did with Midnight Memories and perform next single alongside lead at album release. Unless they debut an incredible new song before 17th Nov or Harry dates Justin Bieber I don't think the album will sell much better than last year.

The song has jumped to #36 on US pop radio and #5 on US iTunes. Not in Top 50 Hot AC or AC yet. It sold a heck of a lot on the first day so hopefully it'll even out to get #3 behind Taylor and Meghan. The boys are way ahead of the competition in global artist iTunes ranking, the album must be getting a lot of pre-orders.

I'm going to pitch my tent at first week of 500-550k in the US and 250k in the UK. If they have a brilliant 2nd single then I'll raise my expectations/hopes. It would be an awesome achievement to get over 500k again, and encouraging if they climb over the 546k of Midnight Memories. The visit to Universal Studios is over 2 days so that's a lot of promo. Doing it when the album is out means they can perform new songs. Last year's GMA concert was rainy and cold, it didn't sell the music to me (perhaps because MM isn't an amazing song).

They've done it before. The gap between the release of Live While We're Young and Little Things was about 5-6 weeks. The gap between the release of What Makes You Beautiful and Gotta Be You was 4 weeks.

The single is #5 in the US, it might stay there now. Hopefully the numbers sold in the first day will put it at 3 in the first week of charting. Is there a way to see Android sales charts? I don't know how many people buy physical copies of singles anymore, I guess the country artists could do well from from that.

We haven't heard anything about a TV appearance before they leave the US so it looks like XF will be the debut of Steal My Girl.

Don't forget people don't just buy songs on iTunes. There are other download sites like Amazon.

SMG already #32 on US pop radio (up 4 spots from yesterday). Could very well be top 30 tomorrow, might take a little longer to climb even higher afterwards, as there is a big gap between #27 and #26.

It had been heavily speculated about in the past & it has now been confirmed by Billboard:
One Direction have financial interest in 5 Seconds of Summer

Good that it's out in the open. Fans were upset that the boys were heavily promoting 5SOS and now they know why.

"each member of One Direction may have pocketed $25,000 from 5 Seconds of Summer's record sales so far."

$25k is chickenfeed compared to the income from 1D but if 5SOS become mega successful and stay big for a while it could be some useful long-term income for the boys. A sensible investment (mostly just tweeting and the support slot, really) so well done Louis.

I think SMG might miss out on the US #3 spot, even with the huge sales it got on the first day. It's down to 8 on iTunes and hasn't made it into Top 30 radioplay yet (although it's getting there). It also doesn't have a proper video yet so streaming may be less than it's competition for Top 5. When the video does come out radioplay will be higher so it might do very well that week. I hope the boys do some promo before XF, there's only been a few tweets and some radio work.

I have to disagree with you there. Fireproof has a mature sound which will appeal to a wider demographic. It would definitely have been picked up by Radio 2. I may be wrong, but 2 of their number 1 songs were play listed by Radio 2?

Steal My Girl is a good song, but I think it will only be bought by die hard fans and I don't believe this is enough to get it to the top spot, although I hope I'm wrong. I do agree with MTUK, not getting a number one doesn't make them failures. They have missed out on the top spot a few times, yet they are still dominating the industry.

I'm so exited for the new album! I keep listening to Fireproof and Steal My Girl all the time.

When are we supposed to be getting the new video?

Also, when do radio 1 update their playlists?

They start a new one every Monday. SMG has moved up to the B List! It's not on Capital still, I don't think the sound quite fits. And actually Fireproof could be better for commercial radio. Hopefully the next single is either a bop or a ballad which Capital love.

Totally agree. Mistake not to have gone with Fireproof as first single. It has a much more chilled out sound and has found lots of favour with people who would not classify themselves as 1D fans. Radio 2 would have been all over this too.

Apparently, NRJ France has made a One Direction channel, playing One Direction songs 24/7, even some performances from X Factor http://tunein.com/radio/NRJ-One-Direction-s171079/
Fans on twitter love it! It's a great idea to bring the fans together, listening to the same song at the same time, writing about it on twitter, thinking about old times

Nicki Minaj's Anaconda has been released today in the UK. So unless also she sells massive amounts next week, she won't be competition to SMG. But I'm sure there's another song released next week out of nowhere... Rihanna or Adele or ...?

Some rather disappointing chart positions for SMG:
#12 in NZ
#15 in Aus
#21 in Switzerland
#36 in the Netherlands...

BSE and LWWY had better debuts! But at least with LWWY I remember that it was released on a Friday, not a Monday evening. Depending on the period in which charts are compiled, that could have made a difference. But there certainly wasn't as much hype as 2 years ago (obviously!).

On a more positive note: airplay in the US looks extremely good, another massive increase yesterday. They're on almost 2200 spins after less than a week!

Oh I thought Anaconda was out next week, good news for the boys. I'd like to know if they are performing on XF next Sunday. Simon is going to be so smug during their appearances this series.

If Take That haven't been delayed by Jason's exit then they could be putting out a lead single very soon. The mystery of Adele continues.
