Though IMO: TW could have attracted more fans if they hadn't acted the way they did -whether it's their overboard LADS attitude OR how they started & then played too much with the 1D rivalry (friendly rivalry would have given them headlines, unfriendly rivalry made fans feel like they had to choose between 1D and TW, and most chose 1D).
In order to have a large fanbase, you usually need to be likable (like 1D): fans like you for more than just your music & root for you.
Of course music matters! I wouldn't buy an album I don't like on purpose just because I like the singer, but being a likeable bunch helps garnering longer-term support IMO.”
TW forget they had much better opportunities in USA than our boys. I can remember us moaning when they were on top TV shows when the boys were just doing a support tour. They also had a show which bombed and although I never watched it I watched a couple of clips on you tube and they didn't come across great nor were they very natural in front of the cameras but to be fair 1D had a head start n that from X factor
