You do yourself a disservice PM. You are a mischievous Monkey but you posts are balanced.
it's astonishing that some do it with great grace and also with a wide sense of what the beginner should be capable of and get out of it. Not mentioning names, but there are lots of friendly experts who we should cosset.

Thank you for that Sofajudge. Although after the comments made towards me and bizarrely about me on a thread I was participating in (as if I weren't there) last weekend would make one wonder

I'm really hoping to hear what about Ashley's Salsa was recognizable (I'm taking a wild guess that the leads crotch jump into the follows face is frowned upon on the social floor
) and if that in-out compression walk toward the camera was an AT thing, or a Ballroom thing, because it pops up in Swing too, where we call it 'Tango walks'.
I like ruminating about the public vote too, and I don't even mind the fan worship, but ultimately I'm more interested in the dances than the celebs, and it's nice to see who has nailed some aspects, who is struggling and who has fallen in love with dancing (Deborah, I still think of how happy dancing made you!).
There is a lot to celebrate on the show, and on the forum. I'm going to do my best to ignore everything else.
I'm also going to try out AT as a New Years Resolution, because the AT enthusiasts on this board have piqued my interest, the SCD version can be entertaining, but it's the discussion about it here that has got me really interested. Thanks

Me too Betty. It is pretty clear to anyone who reads the forum regularly who knows something about the dancing. I clicked on this thread again because you were the last poster and I knew there would be something worth reading. Your insights into the Lindy-hop, ECS (or is that WCS?) Charleston etc, genres have been fascinating.
LOL taking your partner's head off is not a recognised salsa figure!

I haven't seen last night's show yet although I did get a PM from someone asking about the salsa so I have looked at that. It was far from perfect (use of feet and floor again mostly) but it was at least recognisably salsa if we overlook the moment he landed on Ola's head and the over reliance on lifts).
If I were observing Ashley in a salsa class I would say he showed great promise, a way to go, but great promise. I would also be telling him to get his heels down. In the VT before the dance when she wanted him to knock things over with his hips, he was all on tippy toes. Had he landed on the ball of the foot and then put the heel down too he would have looked more grounded masculine and got the hip action. However he seemed to be coping well with turns in a double hand hold which can fox many a beginner. In terms of authenticity I would have given it about a 7 - if a hard core club or street salsa was a 10. By the same measure I would have given the disco salsa a 3 for its authenticity.
