Repairing broken iPad 2 screen
Valentine
08-12-2013
My son dropped his beloved iPad (which he has treasured since he got it last Christmas) on Friday. It still works perfectly but the screen is badly damaged, there's also slight damage to the corner casing.

What's the best way to get it repaired? I'm not keen on taking it to one of the repairers on the local market but would Apple be extortionate? Also any idea on cost and how long it takes?

You'll get a new ipad (refurb but effectively new) for £206

Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.

iPad model Out-of-Warranty Service Fee
iPad mini £176.44
iPad, iPad 2,
iPad mini Retina £206.44

iPad 3rd, 4th generation,
iPad Air £256.44
All fees are in British Pound Sterling and include VAT and shipping. The £7.44 shipping fee applies only if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping.

But.... If you milk it... Your son is devastated, been crying for a week and he's only 5.... Free ipad I reckon. Sunday morning is a good time to catch the Genius Bar in my experience.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't get to an Apple store today as I'm in Cornwall, otherwise I'd give it a go. Seems very expensive when you consider the price of a new one. Am hoping to get up to Manchester in the week, so will try to appeal to their better nature.

Alternatively if you Google "iPad screen repair" there would appear to be lots of firms offering to replace just the screen for ~£75

I know, offering 12 month warranty, but I'm a bit wary. Has anyone any experience of using one?

Not personally - but these firms have generally started doing iPhone repairs and I,personally, would be happy with one that seemed fairly well established.

Having read what is involved it could even be a DIY job but having all the tools and experience is going to make it much smoother!

Sit down and have a chat with him.
If he is not too locked in to it, just maybe selling it on ebay and upgrading to a Nook HD+ could be done for free

Quite obviously, that option is not for everyone.

In my experience of having done Ipad 2 screen replacements, patience and the right tools are fundamental. If the casing is damaged that'll need replacing too or the new screen will simply crack when it's pressed into place. There are plenty of companies around the net that offer the service so shop around and more importantly, google reviews of each one.

Good idea, I'll do that. Selling it isn't an option, he's far too attached to it (and to be fair he's really looked after it, this was a complete accident)so I'll find a reputable company to fix it and then trade up to a newer version for next Christmas.

When its replaced/repaired get a wraparound case for it, it may just prevent a repeat!

He already has 3, plus a padded bag designed for iPads, just prefers not to use them, goodness knows why!

When the accident happened, he actually did have the bag with him but had taken the iPad out to use while in the car. He forgot it was on his knee when he got out of the car and it dropped out on the hard floor.

Anyway, happy to report it is all fixed now - turns out my brother knows someone with a computer shop, so he sorted it out for £70.
