Let's Be Honest About the Brit Awards
Could anyone fail to notice the American style production? That was just for starters. Why do it for God's sake? It doesn't suit British shows in my opinion.
Anyway, just looking through the nominations showed a dearth of true British talent on show this evening. Or, more accurately, showed that the majority were ignored in favour of radio friendly, safe shite. I admire what some of the new Brit bands have produced, don't get me wrong. But should Franz Ferdinand have really won anything on the back of such a crap show? The guy can't sing. Any one of us here would sound good in the studio with the tweaking of studio knobs and computer cut and paste - believe me; I have been there and seen for myself. But tonight? Franz couldn't and didn't cut it live. On possibly the most important night of their career so far (in terms of exposure and reward), they bombed with their lead singer out of tune from start to finish. Well, that's when you could actually hear him, anyway. Shockingly bad. Best Rock Artist eh? Franz Ferdinand as voted for by Kerrang viewers. Is this the traditional British humour coming through? Since when have Franz Ferdinand been a rock band? I know their one and only album from start to finish. Not a bad product, but rock? No, no, no, no, NO! This is why the Brits compare to the Smash Hits Awards - there is virtually no difference. There appears to be little knowledge of music by those on the scene. Where is the hope? I despair. The only rock act on display tonight were Green Day. Fair play to them. A fine performance. Compare them to FF. There is no comparison. So, Muse should have been Best Rock Act - no doubt. At least the bitter pill of losing that award was made a little sweeter by winning Best Live Act. Muse are class. They will outlive FF. You heard it here first. Keane have been slagged by many here for being bland and churning out the same song time after time. All I can say is get the bloody album. You obviously haven't listened and have turned off in ignorance. Love it or hate it, 'Hopes and Fears' is a great album all the same. And tonight they proved they can cut it live where others could not. Speaks volumes doesn't it. The growth of a band is all about live performance and not what you can tweak in a studio. Best album was well deserved as was best newcomer. They should have received best Group too, but there appeared to be some balance being struck this evening, probably due in no small part to the fact that FF are off to the Grammys shortly and we must be seen to go hand in hand with our US brethren. There was no room for Kasabian to be recognised. Give them a couple of years. They will have their day, just so long as they don't f*** it up trying to be the next Oasis. Hats off to the Scissor Sisters. They cut it live as well as cutting it with a great album (apart from 'Comfortably Numb' which is shite). So gracious too. As were Keane, FF, Muse, et al. It made a change from the beer swilling, farting, swearing bunch of tossers we've seen on stage simply for effect in previous shows. They are there because they entertain with their music; not because they are comedians, clowns or public ****$ in waiting. We have enough of those in Government thank you. This year, behaviour was far better and that bodes well for a level head and the future of great music (not so many mock US accents, either which makes a change). Still, continue with The Brits in this vein and they may as well combine the Brits with Smash Hits! Bash Hits perhaps? Or just The Sh**$? The British Music industry has got to start recognising the influence and appeal of music that doesn't make the charts. Otherwise, the current nepotism and inter-breeding that takes place makes for a very stagnant pool. This is the most frustrating part of all this and very many will not have a clue what I am on about. Rock should be recognised in terms of Muse being put up against the likes of Anathema, Arena, IQ, Mostly Autumn and Magenta, etc. This is true Britsh Rock which is shifting considerable volume but which is not recognised as it is neither sold or played in the right place. C'mon, it's time for a level playing field. Let's start exercising more than a solitary braincell at a time and embracing diversity and true talent. Until the true diversity of both the musician and the listener is accounted for, the Brits will remain but a token of what they should represent. |

I have listened to Keane's album as my beloved likes them and I hate it, no actually it makes me want to smash up my precious and expensive HIFI, its on a par with Dido, i.e. musical Ritalin.
I hope they die a very quick death (musically), you have no idea how much I despise their music. |

Keane are a deathly dull band, who seem to be made up of the worst parts of coldplay, feeder and athlete put together.

Didn't Belle and Sebastian win Best Newcomer a few years back, despite them being around for about 5 years before?

but its always almost entirely irrelevant to the music I've been listening to. I can't really complain too much this year because most of the good music I've enjoyed has come from North America or newer British bands who are releasing albums this year.

Last year's show was alot better IMO
This year's one sucked big time. The dodgy film type was one of the main contribuing factors to this. |

actually, that kerrang thing did seem a bit odd, didn't it?
and what was with 'best pop act"? avril lavigne? not british. west life? not british. natash bedingfield? australian, but scrapes through on her british passport. bob geldof? not british. and "the music hasn't stopped". hasn't he just released about 3 albums in 20 years? fair enough, some recognition for bandaid etc, but lifetime achievement in music award? hmmm. Natasha Bedingfield was born in England. Daniel was born in New Zealand but moved here when he was very young.

Radio 2 listeners voting best song of the last 25 years. It was going to be Angels, of course it was. Why not choose commercial radio and TV for that? Then you have a more level playing field - Virgin and Planet Rock, GWR (80s, 90s, today) and The Hits, Magic and Heart, Kerrang and The Storm. Then we might have had some songs up that were pop, rock, easier, etc. Just my opinion - I don't think Angels is the best song of 25 years, but it's what housewives chose. I don't like Keane by any means, but they shifted loads of albums and lots of people like them. Doesn't mean they shouldn't win anything. I really like Franz Ferdinand. I feel like The Brits were trying to play up to the popularity of Guitar music last year - and it all sounded the same to me - Keane, Embrace, Snow Patrol, Athlete etc. I think Muse should have won best rock track. Similarly I think V fest this year is going to have all those bands, rather than RHCP, Foo Fighters, Muse etc. |

I thought the BRITS was a fantastic showpiece for music.
All the bands were good (apart from The Bedingfields & Snoop Dog $hite). |

Doesn't Snoop Dog has a little head? Or is it his jacket which is much too big. He looks ridiculous!

I thought Chris Evans did OK under obviously strict control - there was no edginess to it - thats what the Brits was missing..
FF - the lead singer mike was way down in the mix.. Nat and Dan Bed - great duet but Ain't nobody seemed a weird choice for Brother & Sister to sing. The worst of the night for me was Snoop doggy and his sidekick (Snoop Puppy?) Given the choice's I thought Angels was a fair enough choice - I know I am going to seem very unhip but I have never got Joy Division - Love will Tear us apart is OK but most of their stuff IMO is utter sh1te. |

Kerrang has very little to do with 'all that mosher stuff' these days so I wouldn't be that surprised if they did vote for FF....Now I'd watch it next year if we had a new catogory: 'Best Metal' as voted for by the readers of Terrorizor...
