While most covers are poor and some better than the original, which artists deserve something unpleasant for a really bad cover - esp of one of your favourites?

Step forward:

DJ Eric Prydz: Call on me - mangling Steve Winwood's Valerie.

[Punishment level: Severe.]

Undercover: baker Street - mangling Gerry Rafferty's original

[Punishment level: I cannot express how much I hate them for this monstrosity]

I am not a hater like a lot of people on DS, but this cover has to be an ultimate career low. I know it was for charity but it's just damn awful.

Lily Allen - Somewhere only we know
Lily Allen is no Adele when it comes to her vocals, but she can sing. Her vocals are horrific on this song and apart from the advert shown 50 times every night, i fail to see how this has become her biggest hit of her career and of the year. She ruins the emotion and vulnerability the original has.

I would agree. It completely ruined the original for me. I can't even listen to the original Blondie song now. And then you have crazy fans saying Blondie ripped off 1D (where's the roll eyes smiley when you need it?).

Glad to see Ronan Keating's 'PC' rendition of 'Fairytale of New York' has already had a mention. I've previously discussed my thoughts on that in previous years on the Christmas music threads. It's a turkey!

You're spot on there. Before that particular track came out, I'd had a bit of a row with former colleagues one night about another cover version released for charity one year, which got me on to how there'd been a trend for pretty awful tracks being released as official charity singles. I still stand by what I said then - just because a song is a charity song doesn't excuse the fact it may be a, to quote you too, a 'damn awful' song. There have been some good charity songs over the years, some of which can arguably be said to stand the test of time. Ones in recent years though have been dire, particularly the Sugababes vs Girls Aloud with 'Walk this Way.'

Speaking of Christmas, Band Aid II's 'Do They Know It's Christmas' from 1989 was/is another awful version of a charity song. I must say I really don't remember it being played at all on radio stations in the 1990s (i.e. after 1989), with most stations choosing the original instead.

The worst version was by Band Aid 20.The Dizzee Rascal rap makes me cringe and most of the singers sound off-key.

You're as entitled to your opinion as I am.

But I completely disagree.

I second this. She butchered one of the most beautiful songs.

Yeah, it was somewhat terrible. Not to mention Bono over-singing his "thank God it's them" line - reportedly after throwing a strop when he originally wasn't going to sing it on the 20 version.

The irony is even Lily herself doesn't like her vocal performance on this, calling it shrill.
She will forever have to sing it at concerts too as it is her biggest hit to date!

After seeing this a lot I just have to say Somewhere Only We Know is not her biggest hit The Fear outsold and spent longer at #1 and Smile will always be her signature song in time SOWK will be forgotten as most who have bought it are likely out of her core audience and demographic.
