Am I missing something, or is there a reason as to why we are seeing old tech on Gotham?
Ive noticed before, but in the latest episode which just aired at US Pace, we have had an old cassette player, an old phone and then in the last scene, what appeared to be a clunky walkman! Are they merely trying to create the show's own universe by having distinctions from real world advances? Anybody know if there is a particular reason, or might it just be a look they are after? |

It is set in Batman's past. The Present is Batman as an adult, so this is 20 - 30 years ago.
I would have thought that despite being Batman's past, they would have set it in a contemporary setting as have done other shows that tell an origin story nowadays!!! But I can understand their setting it in the past perhaps to make distinctions. |

While there is some old stuff shown on screen suggesting anything from the 1940's to the 80's they also have mobile phones (though not really modern ones). Here's an article on the design of the city Actually reading that article they say the late 1970's/ early 1980's is the period they are aiming for though as I said people still have mobile phones that are far more modern than that. |

Not my favourite but I did like the whole Viper/Venom drug and the effects were pretty devastating enough to watch on screen.
Stan made for an interesting enough, though too quickly dealt with villain. Bullock was probably his least horrible in this episode too but Essen needs a bit more development character wise. Loved the scenes with Gordon, Oswald and Maroni in this episode as well. Oswald just about managed to survive getting killed by another mobster once again. Fish sleeping with Nikolai continues to show that she seems to have many Plan Bs to get rid of Falcone. I almost feel a bit bad for him. He's obviously going to fall hard for the newly revamped Liza as well, isn't he? Loving that Alfred is now on board with Bruce's detective work. Nice brief scenes with Edward and Selina too this week, 7/10 |

Interesting origin for Venom.
I'm also surprised they've made Wayne Enterprises corrupt. I wonder where that will go... |

Well, a part of it. Was an interesting enough twist though.

They don't want to specify what year/decade the show is set in but rather have it timeless.

I think there is a real problem with inventing new villains every week. Everyone is looking for the famous names. The actor destined to be the Riddler even looks like Jim Carrey. If you don't see that then they put 'riddles' in the script or have him drink from a cup with a ? on it. In one scene I was actually waiting for the actress to say something like ' you speak in riddles' and she did. Meanwhile they had what I thought was a tedious villain the week.

Won't be much of an investigation to find out who the Riddler is by the police when the time comes. They'll know what his bank details are, his inside leg measurements and how many sugars he takes in his tea. The spirit of the goat villain was pretty stupid as well. They could have at least made it a bit scarier than a goat. I thought Penguin's mother was about to stroke his dong with that sponge at which point I'd have stuck my boot through the TV.
It's better than The Flash but it was a weak episode this week. |

I liked the episode. The end scene was brilliant and Bullock proved he can actually be a decent person and cop when he makes the effort.
The therapist's motives were no different to Balloonman and Viper guy but she was more interesting than both of them combined and it would be nice to see her again for another episode. Gordon and Barbara, eh, their relationship stuff drags a lot. I like that Barbara wants to help but so far, it's not really working. oswald basically screwed Bullock, Gordon, Montoya and Allen in one fell swoop with that entry at the last minute. The scenes with his mother (that bath one especially) creeped me out big time. Nice to have a breather from the Fish/Falcone/Maroni stuff this week. Selina breaking into Bruce's place was interesting but was it really needed? Maybe with the box she stole but otherwise the episode didn't need her. Loved the Nygma scenes, even if he did creep poor Kristen out, 8/10 |

It's a little odd that they didn't do that.

Not to burst your bubble but iiuc we're going to be introduced to a long line of Joker possibles so would they really have "given us the money shot" this early on ?!. Though you could always spoiler-tag your figurine so have something to wave in my face and go "ha!!" if you're eventually proven correct. ![]() Quote:
That's because the writers blew it. After Selena stole the object from sleeping Bruce, in true Batman fashion: the camera should have panned back to him after she left, he should have opened his eyes and then gone back to sleep.
![]() btw: re: Mr Goat, Early on in the ep I thought this was going to be their version of the Court of Owls storyline. <- nearest thing to an owl smilie.

It's really starting to annoy how once scene Jada Pinkett Smith sounds like she's imitating Eartha Kitt and then then next scene she isn't.

The problem I got with this show is it's unrealistic portrayal of a young Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne seems to already be Batman as a kid, he's already got his moral compass bang on, he's doing adult detective work etc.
I think they could have done a better job showing us the journey that a young Batman would take. Someone who would become Batman is not an average angry guy who one day decides to take a stand, it would be an extreme personality shaped by his experiences. He would go through different stages, from one extreme to the other, before he gets his compass where it needs to be. How I would have done it is first have Bruce Wayne become a very angry kid after his parents got killed. First have him getting into fights at school and being expelled for beating the living crap out of bullies, and Alfred and Gordon have to keep stepping in drilling into him what is right and what isn't. Alfred and Gordon should be his moral compass right now. For instance, in the balloon man episode instead of having Bruce say "he killed people that makes him a criminal too", I would have had him say "Those bastards deserved to die, they're just like the scum that killed my parents" and then have Alfred or Gordon grab him and shout "Nobody deserves to die Bruce, nobody!" and maybe Bruce runs off and Alfred says "I hope one day you change your mind" as one of the shows many winks to the audience. Other than that I'm enjoying the show. |

Best episode yet. The twist at the end with Penguin and Falcone was nicely played. The fact that Oswald is desperate for Gordon to see the light kind of speaks volumes too, doesn't it?
I don't want to hate Barbara but bloody hell, she's at seriously risk of becoming the Lana Lang/Laurel Lance of this show if she doesn't wise up. Of course she had to get herself kidnapped by Falcone and Victor and be used in order to get Gordon to back down. Falcone is interesting though, I'll give him that and I do like that he's fully aware of Fish's scheming and the meet up scene with him and Maroni was nicely played between the two as well. Bullock had some interesting moments in this episode and even Essen showed a bit more character as well. Having both Renee and Crispus as allies to Gordon is a lot better than what we had gotten in the previous episode. Good scenes with Bruce and Alfred as well. Much as I love them, the episode worked by not having Edward and Selina in the mix, 9/10 |

Yes to it being a good ep, but what Barbara did pissd me right off.
Just what was her bargaining chip to get Falcon to not kill Gordon ? Did she think she could simply give him a smile and he'd back down? Her returning, leading to the de-arrest of the Mayor and Falcon is going to lead to many-many deaths, and that blood is on her hands. Hopefully Gordon has still to meet the love of his life cos methinks he can't be rid of his current squeeze soon enough. oh yes and the shoehorning of a Bruce scene into this week's ep was weak. Still think Gotham should've started with Bruce leaving town and Gordon arriving - maybe even passing each other on the motorway. |

That was a cracking episode, Falcone and Penguin were especially brilliant.
My one (big) gripe was Barbara becoming the most staggeringly stupid person in Gotham! I appreciate they needed a device to make Jim back down over the Mayor/Falcone, but they handled it really badly. |
