So they've expanded the bruce wayne character because of the young actor. I do think david mazouz who plays him is a fantastic actor.

Expanding the character so we get to see him as a whiny little kid in the background doing not much at all as countless colourful villains tear down Gotham City. I'm keen to see how the ptb make a "Gotham show with Batman" interesting.
Its good but the pilot is a bit "I'm The Riddler" *wink to camera*
Still glad the guy from Terriers is not 100% a bad guy. Quite a nice set up with the grey moral area of the police relationship with the organised crime.

As someone who knows nothing about the batman backstory or pretty much anything to do with the batman 'world' is this a show I can watch and not feel like I'm missing a lot of 'inside jokes/nods to the audience'?

methinks your 'ignorance' will benefit you in that you won't be miffed each time they deviate from the "real" Batman history. What you're gonna get though is each time they do something new there's gonna be a flood of posts here bitching about it and explaining in excruciating detail why the show has made a mistake and a whole bunch of wah wah wahs.
This show is doing their own spin on the pre-Batman Gotham so I don't think you're gonna be missing out on diddly, you'll just get to enjoy it in a differently to those who know that such-n-such a character is important, etc.

I read a review of the pilot before it aired. The reviewer made an interesting comparison with Smallville. It took 10 seasons for Clark to put n his cape. They were lucky it was on the CW as they accept lower ratings. Supernatural has survived because of this. He was wondering how long viewers would accept never seeing Batman. Bruce is only a kid and I doubt any show on the major networks would last that long unless I is a procedural. The only way of that is time travel episodes which I believe Smallville did use. Was Batman in the Justice League? I can see them doing that. Otherwise we will never see the villains as we know them. Seeing them as young is a novelty but it could get boring.

Im thinking the same really. Not sure it will work in the long run but I will watch it.
I found it quite an engrossing 48 minutes, which is odd considering I have seen nearly every scene in it in previous movies. Wondering how they are going to play it in future episodes - youthful hijinks from Bruce and 'Catgirl' Camren amid the nasty adult villains, could be a fun series.
I thought this show was all about young Commissioner Gordon and his battle with the underworld. That and the fact it's taking place when Bruce Wayne is a young boy. That was my understanding of it. Now it's less about Gordon and more about Bruce Wayne as a kid? What's the point? The show would have to be on for years and years for us to see him turn into Batman. That definetely ain't happening anytime soon. So focus more on adult Gordon and less on little kids!
I hope the showrunners know exactly what they're doing otherwise they're going to alienate a lot of potential viewers.

Im glad to hear the positive reaction to the first episode of Gotham.I am tempted to pick up the Gotham Central graphic novel that the show is based on to read before I start watching the show!

I have just watched it and I didn't like it. Just found out he created the mentalist which explains it. The camera is always in closeup of Ben McKenzie who is far too hard nosed: he belongs in Sin City.. I liked Gary's interpretation in the films: hard nosed but also gentle and compassionate.
We have already met cat girl and penguin. I don't follow the comics but if Gordon and Bruce meet all the villains now it will completely mess up the mythology.
From what I have seen in the cartoons etc something happens to adults that send them potty: Batman never kills them because he has compassion for them. They always end up or break out of Markham asylum. I just can't see how this is going to work.

this show is its own thing, not canon to the Batman comics, just like Smallville wasn't canon to the Superman comics (though it is canon to the Smallville line

But like someone said Superman didn't have enemies as a kid so that had free will there. We did however see an episode with the flash and aquaman and the justice league. Plus we saw supergirl and Lana then Jor El his mum and then Lois Lane. We even saw General Zod.They didn't mess with the canon they were just moving towards it. That was also why they brought back Lex Luthor after the actor had left seasons before.
I just wish they had chosen a different leading man. Ben spent years playing a cop on Southland and he looks stiff. He can widen his eyes but that is it. I prefer the casting of Matt Ryan in Constantine. From the trailer he is far more dynamic. I think viewers will just see Ben stomping around looking grim.

If canon has Clark Kent sans enemies as a kid and the show gave him enemies as a kid then the show is not canon and was its own thing and thud did what it liked, creating new enemies and bring in the well known ones with their own tweaks, Similarly this is what Gotham is doing / can do - maybe that too will get a comic-line after its series finale.

Personally I wouldn't. It would probably make sense for this thread to be more US paced at the moment.

Well every network has gone superhero crazy. I read about Lucifer on Fox and then Supergirl on the CW. Not all of them are going to survive so I will be interesting to see if those staying true to the comics survive or new imaginings. I don't know much about the DC or Marvel universes but there are many who feel protective of them. I will just see which I enjoy the most which usually comes down to who the producers cast. The women on this one are the usual barbie doll type.
As long as a series is true to the character then I'm not bothered what stories we're told. I can separate one version from the next. So I can enjoy the recent animated-Bat series as its own entity, no problem. Though I guess we "fans of the originals" all have different views on what being "true to the character" means. I also liked the Constantine movie, really liked it in fact, but many couldn't get over (1) him NOT being blond and (2) being an American, but to me those things weren't important. But then re: Friday 13th (2009) some people weren't bothered that Jason laid intricate traps with little warning bells tied with dinky bows and took a hostage, providing food and shelter for her for months, whereas I, a fan of the previous 11 movies, hate this movie with a passion and would like its very existence wiped off the face of this Earth. - but hey, maybe Jason will turn up to one of Bruce's play dates
