Jada Pinkett was giving me some serious Eartha Kitt vibes.

I'm liking it so far
be more pacific

There is no singular canon. Some versions of Superman have Jonathan Kent alive and well during Clark's adulthood while others use Jonathan's death as a formative experience. Some versions have Lex Luthor as a well-known criminal while others show him as an ostensibly legitimate businessman.

The same goes for Batman. There are so many different versions in different media that there is no definitive "canon" anymore. Even the current New 52 comics universe will be subject to massive revisions in the future.

The Waynes should have donated more money to Gotham's mental health services, there are a lot of troubled people in that city who could do with professional help. I'm finding this hard to care about with out Batman. It's like turning up to a vegetarian barbecue and being handed a tofu burger with non-alcoholic beer. It looks right but is oh so wrong.

There is a US Pace thread, but everyone seems to be using this... perhaps the two could be merged and the title of this updated?”

I was going to ask the same thing. Anyway, I thought the pilot was solid, not great. I like how dark it is in places and enjoyed the hammy performances from Jada Pinkett Smith and the actor that plays Bullock. I actually forgot about Bruce halfway through which is a good thing as it proves the characters here are compelling enough without the need for the Dark Knight, himself. Batman is always the least interesting thing in his own story so 'no Batman' shouldn't be a issue.

If there is one problem I have with it is that the creators need to have some restraint. You don't have to constantly reference every thing from the Batman universe and characters like Catwoman and Ivy are completely unnecessary. They seem forced for the sake of pleasing the nerds; it was very Agents of Shield - and that is NOT compliment. Look at Arrow for example. They waited until season 2 before introducing the idea of superhumans (Flash) and we probably won't see aliens until the 5th or 6th season. You need to pace that stuff out. Gotham is solid enough without all the desperate Easter eggs and references.

What year is it in Gotham?

No idea. I read somewhere that Heller and company were trying to capture a timeless feel to the show, so we may never get a specific choronology for it.

Just watched it. Really enjoyed it! It's so good seeing all the crime going on before the Batman series/films started and how it lead onto that.

It was brilliant seeing the villains as youngsters...Posion Ivy, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, and I would say the comedian is the joker, BUT is that not too obvious? I heard that the Jokers reveal will be surprising, so maybe it will be a character (a good guy) in the show who we won't know by name, or goes by a different name, who won't turn evil until after?

With me, I have only watched the films, not the TV series/cartoons/comics, so I am basing it on original films. So I am a little rusty on some of the history. So, Barbara is at the moment James' girlfriend, yes? They will get engaged and she becomes Barbara Gordan... but then what throws me off track is the cheesy Batman and Robin with the introduction of Batgirl.

Barbara Kean (character in this show) is James Gordon's wife/ex wife.

Barbara Gordon (BatGirl) is either his niece (who he adopted) or daughter in different versions of the story.

Thank you! Completely forgot that there was to Barbara's and forget to take into account the years missing weirdly enough!

Saw the pilot, thought it was ok..some of the dialogue was a bit naff, i didn't like what people were wearing, it all seemed to fashionable and modern.
I will watch the next one though.

They seem to want to bring all the villains on scene at once. This might work with 13 episodes but not 22. We may get hem teaming up as they did in the classic 60s. films.

hmm

as i said when i saw the trailer, looks like they bludgeoned a ton of stuff into the one single episode, which is ALWAYS a mistake in my books, but planning it out in a very long term is also a mighty risk too!

and it just seemed too quick, not enough to bed itself in, and certainly not enough to create some real backstory!

but there's something there to be noticed, and if they can create some space this could be REALLY good!

There's still 15 episodes to go, so plenty of time to develop certain plotlines properly too.

A mediocre pilot. Not terrible, just okay. It wasn't the most attention-grabbing pilot I've seen. Bit cartoony at times, which I guess is the comic book influence.
Will Smith's wife doesn't make a very convincing villain and comes across campy. Ben McKenzie is fine as Jim Gordon, but he could be playing any cop for all I know.
And they seem to be going the whole Smallville route with Batman and Catwoman getting to know each other as children like with Lex and Clark.

Alfred sounds way too cockney, passive aggressive and loud to be the mild-mannered butler he's meant to be. The actor's performance was like an over-the-top parody of Michael Caine's Alfred. He sounded more like Danny Dyer though.

ep 2 - wish they'd added a little bit where Gordon took Cat to task for using that "I'll say you touched me if you don't do what I want" thing with the first cop. Other than that, a solid ep, nothing special, nothing out-n-out amazing, but I'm sticking with it.

I saw an article where Ben said Gotham was better without Batman. The trouble is Batman is always there. It just seems whatever is going on they feel they must see Bruce to show his development into the character. It just seems too forced.

This goog cop bad cop routine is already very tedious and the gratuitous violence seems in bad taste in a society that is eaten up with gun violence. Given a choice I would pick the 1960s camp version any day for enjoyment.

I loved it. Yup, definitely sold on this series.

The children playing both Bruce and Selina are fantastic and this episode served them really well too.

Bruce testing himself was interesting. Wanting to help other kids was wonderful as well. The scenes with him, Gordon and Alfred were fantastic.

Selina is bloody fantastic. I think she's becoming my favourite character as well. She scratched that guy's eyes and probably could've taken out Patti if Gordon hadn't showed up either.

The child snatching plot was effective enough - Patti and Doug being horrible but interesting enough guest baddies. The Dall Maker thing will probably resurface later on as well.

Loving the dynamic with Gordon and Bullock in this episode. Not sure about Essen and Mayor Kind either but they're interesting enough.

Great scenes with Fish and Falcone as well. He certainly doesn't take betrayal very well, does he?

Not enough of Renee, Barbara, Crispus or Nygma but that's fine for now.

Oswald killing one jock and kidnapping the other. Yup, he's definitely dangeous. Loved his mother though, 8/10

It's got some good ingredients, all that is missing is Batman.

Perhaps the other cop didn't mention it to him, why would he?

^perhaps cos he was an honest cop and she'd freaked him out, or cos he was a dishonest cop and wanted to warn Gordon what to expect.

I'm loving it, a clever take to see how Gotham's most famous villain's came to be, sit back and enjoy as it's so easy these days to bash everything!

And it looks great as well.

Ep 2 was better than the pilot for me. I'm giving it a 7/10 on my (usually quite harsh) judgement scale.

The Penguin is the best character so far. The actor who plays him is very good. There are some good actors playing quite minor roles in this. The husband from ep 2's husband and wife baddies (I'm being deliberately vague here as I don't want to spoil anyone) is another very famous face. Actually, so is she.
