This was the show that began my radio-phoning-up career. I wanted to explain to Mike and Richard the problem with their misunderstanding of the hoary old chestnut "If God exists, why does he allow suffering?" (I come on at 39mins 49secs)
It was nice to get his admission that, since he doesn't believe in God, it would never occur to him to consider the question from a spiritual perspective. Exactly my point! Though he didn't sound as if he understood - or wanted to understand - why I made it. Still, I liked his shows and their opportunity to have such discussions in the first place.
If you ask a question about the existence of a spiritual being you need to be able to think about the question from a spiritual perspective. Applying humanist atheistic philosophy to a question asking about God's potential motivation for doing anything is simply not going to get you anywhere. It's like trying to measure the circumference of the M25 using the smell of rain.
It was a great period for talk radio back then. Nowadays I have to try to make do with LBC which has now become basically the Fox news of UK radio. But it's more profitable for the shareholders, and that's the important thing, right!?
