Wonder why that dentist had a ISDN line in the first place?

Would it have been a dentist that did media work anyway or did he want a high quality phone line in the first place?

Surely these days Talk Sport would have done something from the nearest group station?

(Know Galloway did a show from a northern station at least once!)

In the latter years of his life the shows were presented from a dentists in Cornwall that had an ISDN line. He arrived 30 minutes before the show went to air, plugged in the line and waited to start. He was 'tired and emotional' on many occasions. One night he plugged in and went for a lie down on a couch in the waiting room and proceeded to fall asleep. The producer couldn't shout loud enough to wake him up, so a brief interlude ensued whilst Mike Mendoza was rushed to air to fill in.
Mike Dicken used an ISDN line from a dentists surgery? what was that all about???.

I wasn't aware the 'studios' was a dentists but that would make sense. He definitely wasn't in the best of health by that stage and his shows weren't quite of the same standard as during earlier years.
I know what Mike would have said to that.

A classic Dicken moment was the Mobile Phones one when he was travelling on the train with the annoying bloke in his carriage talking loudly on his phone, I've linked it below.

Because Audioboo only allows 3 minutes maximum on free accounts I have had to split it into two parts unfortunately.

Part 1 sets it up. (top link)
Part 2 is the story as told by Mike.

I have a very vivid memory from the 1990s of a handover one afternoon from Steve Allen to Dickin where Dickin was audibly plastered. Allen tried to get him to explain himself but Dickin just said he had been for a lunch meeting, and dropped a hint that it was something to do with a job. Was this Talk Radio wining and dining Dickin to get him to join the station?

So thats why they used the Dentist in case they needed a filling ....

His health might not be in question, but it seems his passing sure is on this thread.

I recall that mobile phone story when it went out. I wouldn't have stayed silent if it was my phone that had vanished, that's for sure.

Was a story in the 'Ten Years of talkSPORT' book written by Gershon Portnoi. A decent read that had many, doubtless exaggerated for effect, funny stories in it.

I don't think talkSPORT's parent companies The Wireless Group (back then) and UTV Radio (today) have ever owned local radio stations in the South of England, certainly not from Mike Dickin's part of the world in the South-West anyway. Most of the British stations they own are in the North of England with a few in the Midlands, East of England, Scotland and South Wales.

George Galloway and Mike Graham (early in his tenure) have broadcast shows from Edinburgh where Talk 107 was based when that station was in operation, I believe that their late night talkSPORT programmes were once simulcast by those stations too. James Whale would occasionally broadcast his show from The Pulse of West Yorkshire in Bradford, usually he'd spent about a week there once a year.

Really interesting thread this, it's good to reflect back on talkSPORT from the 2000s and the later career of one of the station's most memorable presenters.

Could be well handy to have you along in this thread Difference your reputation proceeds you I know in past Talk Radio UK and talkSPORT presenters, dates, other things and good memory.
You've already answered one question already for me, I've been writing "Dicken" (I know some others have been spelling it Dickin) now I've seen how you've written it I think I've got my answer.

The moon landings may have been faked well unless you were there how do you know.! Mike had his beliefs you have yours respect to both.
You shouldn't respect somebody's beliefs if they are based on very shoddy evidence which can be easily made to look ridiculous. Which has been the case ever since conspiracy theorists sprung up.

Edit: In a way it's sort of a similar argument to the BBC requiring an alternative view on ANY story, even if the alternative view is based on shoddy understanding of the story and easily discredited evidence.

I seem to remember Chris Moyles did a nice tribute after his death on his Breakfast show to an audience of people who had probably never heard of him. Anybody got a clip of that anywhere?

I haven't but boy I'd love to hear it, your right most of the people listening that day to Chris Moyles will have been saying to themselves "Who the hell was Mike Dickin"

I don't think talkSPORT even did a tribute but I could be wrong.

There was a tribute hosted by James Whale. Mike Allen contributed to the programme.

God bless chrismoyles.net

I've only heard clips of Mike Dickin over the years but he sounds fascinating. Moyles was obsessed with the likes of James Whale, so it's not surprising he should have shown an interest.

I miss Moyles doing stuff like this. It showed a third dimension to his character, that he wasn't just a gob on a stick.

Yes, if bigotry, casual racism, blatant mysogyny coupled with a patronising delivery is your bag , you certainly missed a treat.

Don't you love it when someone acknowledges the views of others ate simply different from their own . . . rather than throwing insults about.

I enjoyed his shows at LBC because he did a good job of playing the angry Everyman standing up for "common sense" against the increasingly "nonsensical" behaviour of governments, Europe etc. But I saw it as entertainment rather than serious journalism and I don't think his style would fit comfortably into modern radio.

I once shared a black cab with a stranger (we recognised each other as living in the same street even though we'd never met). He turned out to be a contributor to Mike Mendoza's show and the cab driver immediately started quizzing him on "the big guy". This turned out to be Mike Dickin, whom the cabbie clearly held in deep respect. Strangely the LBC man wasn't at all interested in talking about Mike Dickin and just said "oh, he's still around" and changed the subject. I often wondered why.

If that were the case, then it made a very refreshing alternative to the almost ubiquitous political correctness, self-conscious anti racism and pretentious "niceness" all presented with a patronising delivery, which is usually broadcast on the radio.

Lots of businesses have ISDN lines still.

Thanks for that Moyles clip p_c_u_k - Moyles is such an old school radio nerd and I don't think people realise that about him.
