Apologies if this is a frequently discussed topic, but what is the best text messaging app for Android? I am looking for an app that costs no more than my existing package, and one that can be used even if the person I am messaging does not have that app.

Thanks,

i use go sms pro. the paid version.

it has an internet based messaging system for people that are using the the same app and regular sms for everyone else.

i like that it is so customisable, really everything you could want to change can be changed.

but at the end of the day it's just an sms app. there is not a lot between them. go sms pro has around 5x the user base of handcent but that may just be because it comes up first when you search for sms.

Handcent for me too - although there are ads and seemingly no paid version to get rid? Luckily I'm rooted so AdFree solved that lssue for me. Many, many features and highly customisable. Certainly puts the dreadful Hangouts?SMS merger in 4.4 to shame.

Chompsms as well.

I've noticed though that it no longer tells me what time the message was sent, just when I receive it. That used to be a handy function as I turned my phone off at night.

Google Hangouts now has SMS support.

Been thinking about just using that.

I use Chomp. The ad-free version is only about a pound or just over.

Thanks, I've gone for handcent and it's doing everything I want it to do so far!

I don't think you can go too far wrong with either Handcent or ChompSMS as they are both very good. Hangouts is devoid of features in comparison and is a pain, especially if you only want the SMS functionality (in 4.4 upwards).

Handcent I used for a while though I've gone back to the stock messaging client (samsung s4)

I have however started using "mysms" - not directly, but left running. It will synchronize SMS messages to the cloud and let me send/receive from my tablet, or PC - SO useful.....!
