We have just had a good update of software which allows the recording of BT 53 Internet channels which are SD & HD.

But there a few items that I feel need to be changed with the BT Youview.

1) Slow remote reaction by the box.
1a) 3 number pressing on the remote does not work well at all.

2) EPG loading needs to be made faster.

3) Internet channels break up and blocky with a code always at the top each day.

4) It would be nice to see why some recording have not recorded.
4a) To set recording with padding of different times when set up a recording.

5) Why should there be a recording sign on the EPG of a show you already recorded the same as a set one ? May be it should be green in colour to mark it and yellow for recording now ?

What ideas would like to fixed or changed in software ???

Agree the EPG is very laggy now. Especially now that all the extra channels have been added. Hiding the unneeded channels doesn't seem to make any difference to the lag. They really needs to be addressed.

It would also be nice to have the ability to reorder the channels in a future update. But not essential.

The number one missing feature for me (other than slow performance as already mentioned) is having the ability to press 'play' on the remote when watching live TV or in the menus, and it takes you straight in to the recorded programme list (like you can with sky boxes). It's a right kerfuffle to get to it now.

And as this is posted on the BT YouView forum, the ability to stream the extra channels without infinity. There is no technical reason why this can't be done, it's just BT's way of getting us to dip our hands further into our pockets and pay for infinity, which to be honest, I wouldn't object to if BT would pull there finger out and make infinity an option for me. My broadband is easily fast enough to stream HD, so I don't buy that 'only infinty has the bandwidth' argument, because I can happily stream two instances of Netflix in HD using my current broadband.

Think you will find the reason it is infinity only is because they have to be delivered over the network by multicast which is sent to the fibre cabinets. If it was done over adsl it would have to be unicast which causes too much traffic over the network and therefore is not looked at as an option unfortunately

If this were the case, then why is it possible to stream the BT sport channels via a non infinity connection? They're no different in how they're delivered.

Multicast is possible regardless of the provider you use. All the content is cached in two locations within the UK (Manchester and London), this is used by all the big companies, Sky, Google (inc YouTube), Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, BBC, ITV, Netflix, LoveFilm, etc, etc.

Most (if not all) ISPs in the UK connects back to these two locations. About 90% of internet content is supplied via the Telecentre caches, with the remaining 10% actually going out to the internet. ISPs don't pay for data fed from the caches, only the data that travels over the transatlantic link.

The Fibre cabinets are just extensions to the traditional telephone exchanges. They run fibre optic cable from the exchange to local cabinets, with the sole objective of reducing the amount of lossy copper, thus enabling faster broadband speeds. The term 'Fibre Broadband' is a misnomer, as it's still typically delivered over copper. Furthermore, the BT Fibre cabinets aren't just used for BT Infinity, any ISP can have a presence within those cabinets, e.g. Sky Fibre is delivered from them. There is nothing special about these cabinets, they are just mini localised telephone exchanges, with built in climate control to protect the equipment against frost/humidity/heat damage.

The multicast is pushed to the cabinets to save network traffic. It is something that can be done but the business decision is BT don't do it.

I have to say I was under the same impression as you about the fibre cabinets but I am sure the multicast is pushed further out of our network than the data centres, to local exchanges to an mse I believe.

The response on that forum post is actually quite clever, as what is stated is factual, however he deliberately neglects to mention that there is no technical reason why they can't make their multicast steams available to non infinity customers. That is glossed over quite nicely in that forum post.

Multicast, isn't pushed to endpoints, it's delivered once demand is created. All that's required is that the routers between you and the content provider is multicast enabled.

If BT choose to restrict multicast to the netblocks used by their Infinity customers, then that's nothing more than a business decision.

Like I said, Fibre cabinets are just mini localised exchanges. The 'multicast' data has to go through the regular exchange to get to the fibre cabinets.

On the BT availability checker, some phone numbers show "copper multicast" as available.

I think they don't use ADSL for multicast for the simple reason that ADSL for a lot of people is too unreliable/slow to provide a reliable service.

They don't want lots more customer complaints about BT TV because of this. The Infinity infrastructure is much better suited, but it doesn't help those left without it.

Perhaps this is why BT paid for a large chunk of 4G spectrum...

Just had Infinity 5 + Humax Youview box installed to use the Fibre b/band services.
What I'm amazed to see is that there are 2 standby statuses for the Humax - "High" and "low" eco settings. The Default "High" means about 2 minute wait for the box to boot up but the fan isn't going all the time when in standby; the "low" setting allows a 15 second start up BUT the fan is going 24/7 ( at 25watts in standby, work out the annual cost, let alone the noise!!!) I can't believe a modern generation product such as this Humax has such a prehistoric power management. Even my Sagem freesat recorder (slated by other forums but is 100% reliable with the latest s/w)doesn't have this problem.
This needs sorting or have I missed something

2) Connected red button - it's strange that what was the "official" connected platform for the BBC has so little support

3) Quicker access to recordings

Certainly agree with the above and in particular item 3. Why when I press the blue YV button is 'guide' highlighted when there is a direct button for 'guide'? I would like to press the YV button and be taken straight to recordings.

It would be good to have better picture quality on the SD channels. We have four different picture sources and the SD quality on the YouView box is easily the poorest.

The HD picture quality is superb, so I cannot understand why SD is so poor?

Think you might have a dodgy box mate. My SD is very good but then of course it depends on how big your TV is and how close you sit to watch it. (and of course how good your eyesight is too - lol)

Nothing wrong with the picture on both SD and HD channels. I would like BT to in time bring out an app like the Sky go app.

for me the biggest thing missing at the moment is the support for Unicast delivery to allow such things as the live channels on NowTv.

There is no reason to contradict this argument with technical details.
TalkTalk provide internet channels via ADSL so fibre is obviously not essential.

Restore the 3 panel lights back to their full brigtness so they can be seen inthe daylight

Only got my YouView box yesterday, but it is the latest BT model and EPG speed, etc, seems fine to me (previously had a Hummy HDR-Fox T2).

Here are my initial thoughts on changes, although they are relatively minor...

1. Option to change default times of skip forward and back buttons.

2. Option to change what the OK button on a programme in the EPG will do - not interested in reminders but would like it to set a recording instead (I know I can just press the record button but it would be nice to change as I'm used to my Humax's old method of recording).

3. Quicker access to recordings - AGREE! Used to just pressing a Media button.

4. As well as Netflix, Amazon Prime would be good too. And YouTube.

BTW, my manual says a USB keyboard will work. Has anybody tried this? Does anybody know of any wireless models that work?

Thought of something else, but this only applies to the DTR-T2100.

There are 3 lights on the front representing power, recording activity and broadband.

However, when in standby the power light not only shows the level of standby (there's an eco and non-eco standby, depending on whether your patience will allow you to wait 2 minutes for it to start up) but also whether it's recording or not. If you're using eco standby then the power light is red. If, however, you're in standby and it's not eco then its purple. If you're recording then it's also purple, no matter which standby mode you're in. Basically, purple can mean non-eco standby, non-eco standby & recording OR echo standby and recording. What gives?

You've got 3 damn lights on the front, all capable of being different colours - I'm very, very sure not sharing one light and one colour for 3 different status' is feasible.

I have the new BT T2100 and i don't experience any of the issues you point out in 1, 2 or 3. Granted when I did have a retail box I thought the EPG was a little sluggish.

Points 4 & 5 are really important in my book. Its crazy that recordings fail and the system doesn't tell you why, but i'd also like to see a fix to the series link issue, so it doesn't record repeat episodes etc. Needs to work the same way Sky's series link works. I'd quite like to see the logos in the epg as per the advertising too.

It is surprising that there is not always an option to continue viewing a recording from previous place stopped. Sometimes when I go back to a recorded programme it will continue from where last stopped (with no option to go to the start) but often just starts again (probably if the box has been turned off). All my other PVR give an option to start again or continue.

Adding Connect TV support (and hence recording) might be useful for me.
Manual DVB tuning option.
Recording 'padding 'option toggle (only auto over-ridden by EPG recording 'start' signal)
Keystrokes - once in the recordings menu you should be able to navigate 'down' the pages and 'back' to jump to the Recordings/Scheduled bar. Currently only possible to use 'left' or 'right' to navigate pages.
Layout - when in a 'series record' group of recordings they should be listed chronologically so the oldest (first) is at the top. This is opposite to the recordings menu which is correctly listed chronologically newest to top.

Press the rewind button (is that the correct name for it?) when the programme is highlighted and that will move the play position to the beginning.

It moves internet channel recordings in 1 min jumps, so a few presses or maybe try holding it?
