If you're connected to your Google account, then the contacts should be backed up through there. Similarly, apps that allow backup and restore of their settings will do so via your Google account too. In terms of the apps themselves, you don't need to back them up as you can just re-download them from the Play Store.

https://www.google.com/contacts for your contacts. Sign in to your google account and then sync them to any Android phone or tablet. Edit them in a browser or on your device.

When you first booted up the phone you would have been asked to sign in using a Google Account or to create one. Did you do either of those things?
my contacts are saved on my phone though, not the sim card or google account... how do you save your contacts to your email account? |

I had the same problem. Not sure if you can do this on every version, but on HTC sense, when in the People app, under menu you can select Manage contacts, this allows you to copy all contacts from Phone to Gooogle, the contacts need to be saved under Google, they should then sync (if you have Google sync enabled under Settings>Accounts and Sync.
If this exact process isnt available on your version, there will be a similar way of doing it, even if this involves backing up the contacts to SD card, then re-imnporting and saving as Google. Hope this helps |

I've rooted my phone and therefore choose to use Titanium Backup to schedule a backup of all modified apps, data and system settings to my internal storage in the early hours and then reboot (just to freshen things up). The very useful SyncMe app then comes along and syncs the backup location with a folder on my NAS drive. I highly recommend this as a backup strategy if you want it local and available (and have a rooted Android device). SyncMe also syncs my music files. Once set up, it's something I can safely forget and comes in very useful if I flash my phone.
Google Drive seems dreadfully slow, so I gave up using that for most tasks. |

And when silly companies make silly detrimental updates to apps you can roll back immediately to the previous version.
