One Direction - Are they bigger than Bieber?
Tekken_Guy
09-12-2013
One Direction just opened with 546k in the U.S. That's their second album in a row to open with 500k+ in the states.

Now, has 1D surpassed Justin Bieber's teen phenomenon level, or will he be remembered as the bigger star?

Yes definitely, Bieber is nothing.

I'm more comparing 1D to Bieber at his peak, rather than the Bieber of today.

I shall answer this question

At their peaks 1d are slightly less than justin beiber and his never say never days. However now, 1d are a bit bigger and justin is trying to enter the hip hop game (lol he will never make it). Justin can recover his popularity by not acting like an ass, im not a 1d fan but they do seem like nice boys.

One things for certain though, they all have awful tatoos.

Peak wise 1D are much bigger, Bieber was never that huge in the UK and 1D are. In fact 1D are bigger everywhere whereas he wasn't.

How do the two compare in the U.S.

One Direction are by far a greater thing than Bieber, Bieber might come of age and hopefully this will change him. I hope no-one is offended by this.

I understand what you're trying to say. However, it sounds like you're just stating your personal opinion on the two artists. I'm actually trying to bring up a discussion on how big they are as teen phenomena.

In North America & maybe parts of Asia JB was bigger in his peak, however 1D are bigger in their peak everywhere else, even in America there quite huge, Best Song Ever reached #2 on the Hot 100 being beat by Thicke, to give an idea, BSB didn't get that high ever, I Want It That Way reached #6 there in its peak, 1D also seem better in album sales, JB isn't that known for album sales as far as I know

1D also have more in them despite being big for three years, at least two more chart topping albums from them before they cool down and people get a tad bored

Only now they're bigger because Biebs has become a total douche, but at his peak, Bieber was most definitely bigger.

The thing with One Direction is that they do make good pop songs, certainly better material than much of Justin Biebers very forgettable output which I don't think even his fans are that crazy about for the most part....but he's good looking so they overlook it. Outside of Biebers fanbase, who even knows what most of his songs are, apart from 'Baby'? 1D's music is better, has broader appeal beyond the fanbase and this shows in their global record sales and how much you hear it played.

The one area that Bieber was definitely much bigger than 1D are is in being a part of pop culture. Bieber is up there with Lady Gaga and recently Miley Cyrus as one of the the most talked about singers in the past few years. Every sitcom and every talk show host has made a Bieber joke at some point. 1D have never been treated the same way by the media. Even today, the media is much more likely to talk about Bieber's out of control personal life than 1D's
record breaking accomplishments.

As far as being a teen phenomenon goes, 1D is seeing much more success than Bieber has at his peak. They have had two 500k+ openings in the U.S., while Bieber's never even made it to 400k.

I wonder how many copies of his new album (or rather a "collection of songs") he's able to sell next week

Year end numbers are out when it comes to touring

12. One Direction
Total Gross: $78,311,383
Total Attendance: 1,223,144
Total Capacity: 1,236,308
No. of Shows: 81
No. of Sellouts: 43

13. Justin Bieber
Total Gross: $77,423,264
Total Attendance: 959,886
Total Capacity: 982,523
No. of Shows: 65
No. of Sellouts: 55

So 1D grossed a million more but they performed 16 more shows + they have to split it 5 ways JB is still laughing all the way to the bank
