Indeed. I'm also very happy about it being a book rather than a few music tracks, or a TV series which is being repeated frequently on the BBC still (the second episode of 'Africa' was on BBC2 this morning).

I'd rather have books instead of music or movies, as music and movies are readily available in standard formats whereas books tend to be a bit trickier to find and aren't as easy to convert.

Of course a good app is the ideal freebie as there's no other way to get them for free unless you do certain things which Apple does not altogether approve of.

Indeed. Just the sort of thing I'd love to read on my 4S. Not. Apple don't sell anything thats really suited to reading of books ... (I'm an e-Ink convert, LCD/OLED/IPS/etc are horrible for reading)

Those under 16 will be saying, what's a book?

I was being sarcastic

I can only guess that we're being underwhelmed by the 'gifts' now so that when the inevitable app or game comes, we'll think it's actually a lot better than it is.

Something you get Justin Bieber to autograph at a "concert".

e-ink is excellent for reading because it "looks right" in almost any environment, but standard active backlit displays can look equally good provided you lower the brightness to the equivalent level. It will feel unnatural at first lowering the brightness in the app as much as you'll need to, but it will look just as good once you've set it right. In iBooks use the 'aA' thing at the top and pull the brightness slider almost all the way to the left, far further than you think you should. Other decent eReader apps will have similar in-app brightness adjustments.

Apologies for assuming you were the sort of person who doesn't like reading books; sarcasm on forums is always a bit of a gamble without some sort of smiley, as I've found to my cost elsewhere

i'm not fussy. a decent, useful app or even a game. an album or music video from someone i'm interested in. i'm sure something along those lines will appear, but the first few days don't fill me with a great amount of hope.

It's carrying on in the same vane as the last couple of years.

that's worth a hallelujah

Comparing the past couple of years (as i've nothing better to do..)

Quote:
“2008:
Day 1: The Ting Tings, That's Not My Name (Music Video)
Day 2: Derren Brown, Mind Control (1 episode of Series 3)
Day 3: Katy Perry, Hot N Cold (Music Video)

2009:
Day 1 - Snow Patrol - digital recording
Day 2 - Episode of BBC TV Programme "Alan Partridge"
Day 3 - Trivial Pursuit - game for iPhone/iPod touch

2010:
Day 1: Cheryl Cole – Promise This (Song & Video Bundle)
Day 2: Father Ted – Christmas Special (TV Episode)
Day 3: Duran Duran – From Mediterranea With Love EP (Song Bundle)

2011:
Day 1: Coldplay - iTunes Music Festival
Day 2: TV Episodes : Top Gear (Middle East Special) & The Trip (Hipping Hall)
Day 3: Lady Gaga - Marry the Night - Single + Video

2012:
Day 1: Holiday Gift (EP) - Maroon 5
Day 2: Score! Classic Goals - Game
Day 3: Sherlock - A Study in Pink - BBC TV Episode (Series 1 pilot)

2013:
Day 1: Justin Timberlake single
Day 2: Africa - Kalahari - BBC TV Episode
Day 3: The Ice Princess - Camilla Lackberg - Book”

Compared to the last few years, IMO, 2013 is very weak so far.

Not great this year.

I see the review on itunes moan it's only for IOS7. Some people are keeping there devices on IOS6 or can't use it for ipod 4th and ipad 1.

A game for under 5 year olds is pathetic.

Well I guess it's OK if you have pre-school children who are allowed to use your iPad?

Anyway, here's hoping there's more widely popular stuff to come this time around.
