For some reason, have always loved Run DMC & Public Enemy, but am really getting a feel for this lately (I must be turning into Tim Westwood in my old age).

I'm already listening to the Beasties, NWA, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC, Public Enemy (love the Anthrax "Bring The Noise" in particular as I'm a rockchick by nature), any other late 80s, early 90s acts worth exploring?

Bearing in mind I hate shitty plastic R'n'B or (c)rap like Eminem & Fiddy Cent. Thanks y'all *word*

For me, there's one album from the late 80's / early 90's that really shines.

The Goats - Tricks of the Shade

Released in 1992, it tells the story of Hangerhead and Chicken Little as they make their way through Uncle Scam's Federally Funded Wel-fair and Freakshow. Good tunes and a great journey as you hear the story unfold.

A couple of songs from the album ..

Typical American

Do The Digs Dug?

As you are a rockchick, have a look at some of Africa Bambaataa's songs, especially this one:

Timezone - World Destruction

Mid 80's song and a different feel to the late 80's stuff, but notable for having John Lydon doing Hip Hop!

Early 80s I know but Hip hop I really like.

I have never stopped listening to these guys. I know Sugarhill were first but this left the lasting impression that music wasn't going to be the same again.

Grandmaster Flash - The Message

Grandmaster Flash - White Lines

Or the fun side...always wanted to cite this

Hey You Rock Steady Crew

The shift in attitude in African American culture represented by Public Enemy and NWA made a lasting impression on me but I'm not sure Hip Hop has really lived up to the early promise. Pop music in general of course was much more culturally significant in the 80s than it is these days.

There's a very slight crossover, and 'Paid In Full' just about covers it, but I was obsessed with house and sampling in the late 80s. I wondered how difficult it would be to make my own house track, if only I could get hold a drum machine and digital sampling equipment...

I could've been a child prodigy... I had video of Wimbledon tennis and some American player throwing a wobbler and shouting 'you say I kick the court?!', I thought, yeah, that would sound great sampled in a house track.

Oh the memories....

I played this album to death the summer before I went to big school....
