Which device for Spotify ?
Hi all,
I am interested in getting some hardware so that I can listen to things like Spotify & Last-Fm without a computer & I was wondering what device is good to get. So far I have seen the Onkyo AV receiver which is very nice, but also quite expensive once you have added the speakers & is also very bulky and won't fit onto one of the shelves on my TV stand. I have also seen things like WD Play & Logitech Squeezebox. Ideally I would like to be able to send playlists to the device via my Android Phone or Android Tablet. I don't know that much about Audio network devices that are capable of using the streaming services & am not even sure if there was something out there, that could plug into the Aux phono's on standard home stereo. I do use my PC or tablet most of the time, but it would be nice to send a playlist to some external hardware for when I am not using the PC or tablet. I am willing to save for a device if need be, but considering I can get the AV reciever and speakers for a little under the £300 from places like Richer Sounds, yes I will have to get various furniture moved around so that the AV is close to my TV, but if there isn't a cheaper better option, then that is what I will have to do. But no more than the £300 mark as the AV reciever will give me surround sound for all of my devices that are connected to my TV and of course the Spotify part can be controlled from my Android Phone. Can anyone suggest anything ? Many Thanks

I listen to Spotify on a Squeezebox Radio. It works quite well on the whole. You can see playlists that you've created on the PC etc and there's a search function. The controls on the radio are a bit fiddly but there are apps for controlling the radio from your phone etc and you can also control it from your computer.
Occasionally tracks that will play on the PC will flag up as "not available in this region" on the radio. I think that Spotify is accessed through Logitech's servers which are abroad somewhere (Germany?). The Squeezebox Radio has now been retired by Logitech in favour of the Logitech UE Smart Radio. This should work in a similar way so far as Spotify is concerned. I think that you need to subscribe to Spotify Premium at £9.99 a month if you want to use devices other than a computer. |
