Disable the Bing button
There must be thousands of internet threads on this subject, but I haven't yet found anybody who's come up with a solution to disabling that wretched Bing button on a Windows 8 phone. Black tape on the screen protector doesn't work, so is there any type of material that can be taped onto it to stop it working?

Not disabling it but you can change it to fire up Google instead by setting the browser search language to Bashkir.

I thought you might be joking but tried it anyway. It doesn't work.
I have found a way to improve it though. I found out that the touch sensitivity was set to HIGH by default. I had been into that menu option many times before and had never realised that this option was available when you scroll the screen to the right. It won't get rid of Bing altogether, but at least it might stop it going off when I'm trying to use the keyboard. |

It does work assuming you have set Google as your search engine in the browser.

Edit: found it under Internet Explorer, but it doesn't prevent the button from going to Bing. |

Assuming we don't overlap again, there isn't a Browser option, only Internet Explorer. Now I've tapped the IE icon on the front panel and found that it goes to Bing in spite of setting it to Google.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by 'open the browser'. Do you mean the magnifying glass button or the IE icon? Either way, there aren't any further settings once you've opened them up.
As I mentioned, the only place I can find a default search provider option is under Internet Explorer and it totally ignores the fact that I've changed it to Google and goes to Bing regardless. |

The IE Icon. The ... option button is bottom left of the display (not the Search button which is firing up Bing).
You have to change that to Google *and* change the search language to Bashkir. |

Actually with a bit of experience you adopt the Apple solution and use a different iHold.

The Windows phones are woefully lacking for customization.

Depending on how you look at it thankfully protected against unwarranted customisation.
