I have a Blackberry on o2 and in my location there is usually only a fairly poor GPRS signal, no 3G on the coverage map. To use the phone indoors or outdoors you need to pick your spot.

Imagine my surprise last week when indoors taking a call there was no dropout or the usual "Hello, hello, can you hear me". Looking at the display showed a full five bars of 3G, this only lasted a couple of days for short periods and has not been seen again. Any ideas? Temporary mast testing coverage?

Are you sure you weren't using an EE SIM card?

That's a weird one, probably was just a test or maybe O2 are now broadcasting 3G on 900Mhz in your area.

That doesn't work indoors though so it can't have been Three.

Temporary mast testing coverage?
Or a temporary mast for event cover, were there any major events on in your area? All networks have a habit of using temporary masts for extra capacity and filling in blackspots during major events/festivals/etc.

I'd have thought Vodafone would have been easier. Joint network after all. They must have forgotten to leave a 3G mast broken after servicing it.

Ah good point.

O2 use COWs regularly around the UK at festivals and stuff,

Edit: Hope you know what i'm referring to, otherwise i sound like a right nutter going on about mobile phone networks and cows

They do! However it's easy to miss because it only works for about 3 days at a time, after which there's a 6 month wait to get them to fix it!

Haven't you heard, mobile phone networks and cows have had a long history together.

Bovine black out

Often, we discover problems before they’re reported. Our Network Operations Centre constantly monitors the network and on one occasion the staff found a transmitter was behaving strangely. We dispatched an engineer to check it out, but perhaps we should have sent a cowboy.

Arriving in the field where the transmitter was located, the engineer was surprised to find nothing more sinister than a herd of cattle, quietly munching away on the grass and trying to look as innocent as possible.

It quickly became clear that the cows weren’t above suspicion. They had been startled by something and, moving towards the transmitter, had inadvertently crashed through a fence and begun grazing on the hardware that connects our base station.

Once on site, our engineers persuaded the owner of the cows to move them along, so equipment could be repaired and we could put a new fence in place. Service was soon resumed, and no cows were harmed in the making of any phone calls.

A lot of O2/VF sites are been Beaconised in the North East, it may of come on, a problem found and then locked down until the issue can be resolved.

As part of the upgrades, a lot of sites ,regardless of how they started (2g only, 3G only etc) are been fully upgraded to the full compliment of frequencies.... Ie U900,G900,U2100 and LTE. Some are also getting G1800.

I know people working on the upgrades in that rough area.

You're may well be correct. This afternoon the GPRS signal was suddenly lost leaving SOS on the display, after about 30 seconds up pops 3G full signal again for about 90 minutes.

Have you checked the O2 website? If it's maintenance or upgrade work it should be listed on their status page.

Shame though, I was hoping for a cow!

Moo!
