"The X Factor," despite its occasional high-profile judges, has always made fewer headlines than FOX's still-trucking-along superstar reality hit "American Idol." But it's evolved every year, and Simon Cowell says he and the rest of the producers have learned from their mistakes and already have changes in mind for a potential Season 4.

"We have an idea in our heads," he tells Zap2it and a small group of reporters backstage after "The X Factor" Top 6 results show. "We learned a lot about what we did wrong and what we did right. Things I think would make the show more exciting. But most importantly is we have to trust our A&R abilities, that this show can find better artists that anyone else. That's the future of the show."

There have been reports that Cowell and Co. are considering a switch to a one-night format, a la "Dancing With the Stars" this fall, and he confirms that's one of the options he is mulling over. "I think that's gonna be the pattern going forward," he says. "That's how we started in the U.K. -- we started off making one-hour shows and 90-minute shows, and now you have two-hour shows and two-and-a-half hour shows and they're like marathons. You know, I like two-hour shows. Everything's contained."

With "American Idol" moving (back) to a half-hour results show for its coming season, it's safe to say if "The X Factor" does come back for Season 4, it definitely won't look the same as it does now.

The problem with The X Factor USA is not the lack of talent on it (the show has found some outstanding vocalists in the live shows).
The problem is SYCO have failed to market any if the contestants properly and create stars. So it fails what it sets out to do.

Season 1 winner Melanie was literally given NO opportunity after winning the show. Producers got too selfish with creating season 2 all whilst forgetting about the original winner.

What good is season 2 without proof that a season works.

If they make season 4 then they better ensure someone from the current season has a hit...otherwise GIVE UP!!

No small part of the problem is that what appeals to British audiences is not what always appeals to American audiences.

That, and I don't think America has forgiven him yet for a 14 year-old child having a melt down on national TV.

They haven't forgiven Nicole either, come to think of it.

Season 1:

You would have thought they would have learned their lesson and raised the age the of the contestants the next season, but no....

Season 2:

The backlash after the one on Season 2 was worse, because people felt they should have learned from season 1, and if you read any of the American reality show blogs at the time there was real anger at creating "good TV" at the expense of young teenagers.

I am one of the people who refuses to watch it as long as they allow such young contestants. It's why the stuff with Nick really irks me.

At the end of the day, the show shouldn't be allowing contestants as young as 14 to appear on the show. It is the show to blame, for the teenager's tantrum, not Nicole. Raising the age limit to sixteen, would be a lot better.

He's lucky Fox has so many other problems they haven't already axed the show. 4m viewers last week is pathetic. But a shorter, probably Simon-less XFUS would be a cheap way for Fox to fill a night they're resigned to losing for a year or two while they build on their strengths elsewhere.

I'd watch it ahead of the other US shows just because I wouldn't have to deal with multiple nights.

I'll be interested to see if Syco can do anything with A&S, they are selling really well on US iTunes and have a small shot at becoming legit stars I think. RR should be good for some teenie cash but I doubt they will become a country 1D the way Simon wants.
