Looks like Windows Phone 9 may drop the tile based interface. Windows Phone 9 will be out in the Autumn of 2014.

Will it happen? Who knows?! But here is more on the interesting rumour:

Can't see them getting rid of one of it's main selling points completely...especially as now Windows PC and Xbox One have all taken on the same look.

I wish they would get rid of it on the desktop.
Windows 7 with the app store would have been fine, but no, they had to ruin it.

It's started already

As you know the Desktop is still there and if you want use it Windows 7 style you can with something like Classic Shell. Can you not stop whining and discuss the original question instead?

If true....

I would say the tile interface was the stand out thing about Windows mobiles.

They might want to do something about increasing the apps for the OS.

I would consider moving from Android to Windows if there were more apps.

Extremely unlikely they will drop the tiles.

The more credible news (from a Microsoft VP) from a few weeks ago hinted that they would unify the apps and look between Windows RT and Windows Phone 8. Perhaps this is what will happen with Windows Phone 9?

The other news from a couple of days ago about 'Windows Threshold' was that the Start Menu would likely return to desktops as 8.1 didn't go far enough to assuage critics. Again it talks about unifying Phone, RT, Xbox One.

I think this article will put an end to all these rumours of Microsoft dropping the live tiles:

Doubt it will stop the rumours - people seem to love them! LOL

Stuff like this is one of the downsides of the net - there are a lot of people out there that make out they know a lot but they often don't.

I like a F1 racing and a lot of the 'journalists' that write about it never even go to the races and just create content by watching TV and reading others stories on the net.

Hmmph this has to be one of those BS stories that come around every so often. That said with the amount MS has invested in R&D behind the Modern UI there ain't a chance in hell it will be ditched completely. They are starting the slow march to unifying all of its systems UI to match ot look like each other. I do genuinely believe there will be a merging of the code behind Windows Phone and Windows RT. You will see a unified marketplace offering apps that will be tailored to the platform. I suspect at some point these apps will also become jointly available on Xbox One. Microsoft is moving slowly towards a unified service both vertically and horizontally. Modern UI will be refined but not dumped.

I completely agree with this certainly true these days. Though in fairness to F1 only the biggest news companies can even afford send people to F1 races these days it quite expensive. Silverstone is ridiculous expensive compared to other countries.

In regards to windows phone UI I'm not a fan of it but I can't see it changing either.

It was designed to look good and work fast on low-res low-spec phones and it does, but hi-res displays are wasted on such a simple UI in a way. I doubt they are getting rid of it completely, but I think they may need to make it more flexible. It does look nice and I like it, but I think each OEM wants to put their own imprint on the software of their device and with WP the possibilities are very limited. Which I find quite good actually, because there's nothing slowing the UI down.

It's essentially the same as creating shortcuts to put on your desktop, just more space wasting and annoying.

MS is moving to a unified look across it's operating systems fom XBox to mobile. This rumour is BS. The metro interface is good on a mobile device with a touch screen and crap on everywhere else imo. I actually quite like the look of WP8 and some time use it on my Nexus 4. In fact WP8 would have been a lot better as a forked Android version with the metro interface.

It will be interesting to see if the Nokia "normandy" phone ever reaches market and what that interface looks like.

^^^ if they don't give you the Google store what's the point. Not in a mobile market anymore who'd provide the content?

There are other app stores you know. Amazon has one. Samsung has one and the vast majority of Android phones in China do not have the Play Store and use alternatives like Baidu. A dev submits his app to the chosen store. There is plenty of Android life away from Google.
