Following on from the "Celebrating women in rock" and broadening the scope this tread is quite simply for posting Great Female Vocal Performances from any genre and any decade so please use some imagination...

Although I had solo performances in mind in starting the thread I have no objection to the inclusion of all female vocal groups and bands with a female lead singer.

As I said diverse I'll kick it off in exactly that mode..

Maria Callas 1958 - Casta Diva http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYl8GRJGnBY

Julie Rogers 1964 - The Wedding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySfBbWxo9QU

Connie Francis - Love Is A Many Splendored Thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbs8EfgE4EI

And finally for now this piece of pure showmanship from 2006. I love the way it takes the audience so long to realise what she was doing:

Anna Netrebko - Quando me'n vo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAgLymJcNxE Stunning dress and necklace too...

As a footnote I found out the price of that necklace after seeing it during that concert

Maybe they had an ANC translator...

She's actually singing in Italian of course

Here's an English translation:

When I walk
When I walk alone in the street
People stop and stare at me
And everyone looks at my beauty,
Looks at me
From head to foot.

And then I relish the sly yearning
Which escapes from their eyes
And which is able to perceive
My most hidden beauties.
Thus the scent of desire is all around me,
And it makes me happy!

And you who know, who remember and yearn,
You shrink from me?

I know it very well:
You do not want to express your anguish,
I know so well that you do not want to express it
but you feel as if you are dying!

Enjoy! In my opinion there's nothing to equal a really first class soprano voice...

I've posted this elsewhere quite recently but personally I could never tire of it. I think it's very much a case of a class singer being in the zone so to speak.

Natalie Dessay - Fruhlingsstimmen (Voices of Spring) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt_sKT-nlE0

All I will add is that it is well worth watching through to the very end...

For me, that performance of the aria is the one by which all others are judged...

And what does Classic FM play? A bloody trumpet arrangement of it! Truly I despair at times...

Joan Sutherland is increasingly regarded as the greatest interpreter of Casta Diva . Arguably Callas is the more passionate.

Joan Sutherland certainly deserves a mention in this thread, and so many performances to choose from, but I would cite this one from the wonderful opera Martha... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlox1c0xgEA

Judith Durham at her best... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpjf_t5tU9w

... no silly gimmicks, just the voice.

I was going to post this elsewhere but thought this thread was probably more appropriate...

Dusty - If You Go Away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyCVxPEPx5Y

And a song that always makes me feel nostalgic...

Petula Clark - Sailor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k9BiDRHANg

And after watching Nicole scherzinger attempt And I Am Telling You, here's the ultimate version as sung by Jennifer Holliday. The last 2 mins is the greatest performance I have ever seen by anyone, male or female http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtnKI3ztz9w&sns=em

I liked the duets Keely Smith had with her then husband, Louis Prima.

Not only was a she a great singer, I liked the way she took the micky out of his stage antics.
She always makes me smile.

The look on her face towards the end of this clip.

I have silent night in pretty much every language and by hundreds of different artists, collecting them has been one of several geeky interests.

So I'd have to differ on that one, not least because I much prefer the more common arrangement...

It was also covered by two of my all time favourite singers so obviously I'm a little biased.

Connie Francis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J96KvNjpKro

And another quite different silent night this time by Kathleen Ferrier http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1_4Hie--UM

"September in the rain" too, is one of my favourites, I've got it on one of my vinyl jukeboxes, I've restored.

I uploaded it to Youtube as well as the "B side" which is, "What a difference a day makes" another favourite, which curiously has received three times as many hits.
