Just about to buy a new Humax HDR1000s 500GB Freesat box to use in France (last one stolen). It'll work fine.

When I've used on demand (all channels) abroad on the laptop, I've had to log on via a VPN (which worked fine in France and the USA).

Can the Humax box be configured to run through a VPN or do I can I do something with the French router or maybe run the Humax box through a computer connected to a VPN in the UK?

I could connect the laptop to the TV and have done so in the past but I think the picture would be better if I could watch via the Freesat box and the EPG would make life easier.

The OP has a dish, otherwise his freesat box would be useless.

The problem is the VOD services accessed directly from the freetime epg.

No the unit cannot be set to directly use a VPN.

Alternatives include services such as http://www.unblock-us.com/
when you can set the DNS to be used on the unit or router (free trial available)

Other methods include a second router which supports a VPM logon or routing the traffic via a PC (a little more complicated).

It's very obvious that the OP knows it will work fine and knows a dish is required, his last freesat box was stolen, did you imagine they pinched his dish and he hadn't noticed .

The only question he asks is regarding vpn services to access IP address locked UK video on demand services. Your post did absolutely nothing to help with his question.

I would imagine it will work with OverPlay SmartDNS which is much cheaper than a VPN and does not slow down the speed of the connection. If the box allows you to switch off DCHP and put in your own network settings it is worth a try.

You'd probably need to use a secondary router which has been set up as a VPN using the PPTP protocol or similar, they are very effective.

I've been living in Belgium for the past year. I took my old Foxsat HDR over and have it hooked up to an Apple Airport router. One can change the DNS settings on the airport router. I've signed up to unblock us. It sets you back a couple of quid per month, but is well worth it. ITV player works on the Humax, BBC iPlayer does not.

I do not quite understand why BBC iPlayer doesn't work tbh. It works on my Computers, iPad and iPhone when connected to my home network.. I don't really like the on demand: experience on the Humax anyway, so i'm just using Airplay from my iPad instead. Hope you can make it work. Best of luck.

As I recall,ITV player works on the Humax without changing DNS settings. I use SMARTDNS and both ITV Player and BBC iPlayer work although I also find the pc version works much better.

You are using DHCP on the Humax? The DNS settings on the router don't have separate settings for the DHCP pool.

With respect, you started it with your suggestion to 'just put a dish up'. From the fact that the OP already had a previous freesat box, it's pretty obvious he would have had a dish as well. grahamthompson was merely pointing out that obvious fact (which you hadn't thought about before jumping in.

No, I have a Foxsat HDR. I find it stalls quite frequently but never have a problem on my pc.

Thanks for all your input on this one. I did (and still do) have a dish pointing at the right satellite!
