Am I right in thinking that recordable blu ray discs are disappearing from our high street stores?

I'm sure they are still available on line but until now I have preferred to buy them off the shelf.
Staples tell me they stopped stocking them sometime ago. Tescos/ASDA/Sainsbury's still sell recordable DVDs but never seem to have Blu rays on display. Same with Curry's (unless I was just unlucky?)

The last batch of BD-R's I purchased off the shelf was in Clas Ohlson back in August but now they no longer seem to have them on display either.

What's happening is it a diminishing market? Or are they perhaps restricting the availblitiy of recordable blu ray discs for the protection of HD copyright somehow?

I prefer to archive my recordings rather than leave them on hard disk.

I think that most people (myself included) record to usb hard drives and play back with a media player (WDTV in my case). It's less than 10p per film doing it this way. I do have a blu-ray burner but it's too much hassle. And if you want to, you can back up hard drives!

I bought a BD burner and struck lucky as I cleared the stock of two PCWorld stores of single BDRWs at a ridiculous discount, and some multipacks of BDRs at a local Asda, all discontinued lines (though I think the BDRWs were lower speed than the new stock, but for 75p each...)

Recordable DVDs still sell though. I see them in shops all over the place. Presumably people are still archiving something to disc.

Thank you both for the suggestions. Some good TDK selections there.

Presumably we're back to on-line sales again are though are we? I haven't seen these on the shelf in my local Maplins.

Recordable dvds - yes. As there are far more dvd recorders out there than blu-ray recorders. And they are about 10p-30p each rather than £1.00 + each for a blu-ray.

Shame Recordable Blu Ray not taking off much at least the stuff you store is on the disc for ever unless it brakes but should be more reliable than a hard drive which just happened to me.

Not as reliable or as fast as a hard drive backed-up to an external hard drive though.

Which is what you should have been doing anyway, right? And which reminds me, I haven't updated my backup for 6 weeks!

However, online is the solution - they who must remain linkless for some weird reason (Novatech) have plenty of BD-Rs, Amazon and others too no doubt. I just don't think they sell well enough for many 'high street' shops to sell them though and when they do their prices are usually exhorbitant.

With the price of Blu Ray RW it could be better just buying the film on Blu Ray if its on sale maybe and better this another reason I have not bought one though now also home cameras take up so much space if you want to keep the files to.

It's not hard to find BD-Rs in 10+ packs for 60p a disc, or branded for 80p, which isn't too bad in view of the extra capacity over DVD-R. I've seen branded BD-REs recently for £1.10 a disc in 5 packs.

But I mainly back up to external hard drive these days, BD-R/RE capacities are too low for me.

Yep 25GB is only good for four - five hours of HD camcorder footage. I'm waiting for the next big jump in hard disk capacities - we've been stuck on 4TB max for over two years now! I know that 5 and 6TB drives are due out soon, but I'm hoping for a jump in technology and go straight to 50TB drives!

i think the answer is i see plenty in stores but they want stupid prices for them (apart from Maplin)
Ive seen them in Tesco, Sainsburys, curry's ... but at over inflated prices
Luckily i have 3 Maplins near me and they always have them on the shelves

And a big risk of a jump in losing a hell of a lot of data too

Writable optical media has a limited shelf-life, and multiple-layer discs are going to be shorter than single-layer versions (sort of like how SLC flash is more resilient than MLC, but for different though related reasons).

Your best bet is probably to buy a load of reputable 25GB discs online, which will be slightly cheaper than a similar size hard-drive, and unlike a hard-drive which could fail at any moment or be subject to mechanical damage, the BD-R discs should be good for several years of storage.

Thanks for that, I will only ever by them from Maplins when I get my first Blu-Ray writer!
