Can do a dodgy dance to decent music; but can't do a decent dance to dodgy music

You can do a dodgy dance to decent music; but can't do a decent dance to dodgy music.

We saw it again tonight.

Sophie danced a Paso much of it straight out of the ballet

And Patrick was stymied by something worse.

Luckily Natalie had appropriate AT music.

The producers are deliberately or through incompetence handicapping the contestants.

I do like PSG but the song is simply not right for Paso

I agree on the whole Henry but I have to say I loved Brendan's Paso choreography. Its a pity he didn't have a partner up to the job. I would love to see him do that again with say Darcy - it would be stunning

Music IS dance.

Good music that is appropriate to the type of dance, will cover a multitude of dance sins. But no matter how good a dance is, if it has inappropriate music that jars with the type of dance, something will feel off. The paso, for example, needs music with drive, drama, and correct thematic artistry.

We have seen this so many times on this show, but particularly this series, with all the odd and crazy music choices. Seen OK to good dancing to very bad music choices, that had people screaming it was 'the worst dance they have ever seen'. It wasn't, it was just the music jarring and making the whole thing seem off. Seen the opposite a lot as well.

The heading of this thread says it all - I couldn't agree more, but will the BBC listen? Will pigs fly?

What I don't get is if it is critical to dance salsa to MJ why not this track? You get all the crowd pleasing MJ appeal without sacrificing the salsaness (except perhaps in the eyes of the die hard salsa music buffs)

The choreo was great. My concern was that it was too much lifted from that ballet youtube.

Perhaps Darcey would have made it even more balletic going by her memories.

Not even sure about "Latin" Karen as she has Salsa / Merengue in her veins rather than Toros.

Maybe Susanna and Kevin? Susanna has that Carmen look.

I agree. Brendan's choreography is amazing. All he needs is a partner who has portray passion for the dance.

That would be good for Salsa.

But maybe just have a Disco instead of the Rumba?

Totally agree. The music is crucial.
I'm not the greatest fan of Patrick but he got criticised for not doing Spanish lines, Not easy when dancing to that song.
I notice that Craig complimented Abbey on dealing with the complicated changing rhythms of Faith. It's not to dance to a samba to that and she did well.
A performance is greatly enhanced if a suitable song is chosen.
I know that if I had been a contestant I would probably end up veering out of the dance and dancing to the song, 'listening to the music' as Bruno often says!

I am really not keen on BC but credit where its due.
He is a very talented choreographer.

I thought that unchained melody was worse for Patrick, or at least that version from the band tonight.

I really liked that song with the dance. Though I noticed a lot of toe leads after Len's comments last week.

Now you see I like a nice rumba. Seems I am in a minority. I get that it has the potential to be very cringy but even then I just focus on the pro. I like the style.

I thought Sophie's music for paso was dire awful and as far removed from paso music as Patricks.. Nicole Cutler was watching the show an hour behind and could not at first work out Patrick's waltz the music was so bad - the music is crucial it can make a decent routine look poor - it is vital SCD sort this out this year has been awful

you cannot get rid of rumba and put something like disco in if so drop strictly name and call it dancing with the stars

Ooo I love tongue twisters ... Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled gherkins on the sea shore, she sells sea shells on the sea shore ... now what was the question?

Hmmm I don't know - I need an expert to comment. I know that most of the time the producers tell the professional what music they have to dance to - then it is up to the professional to sort out a choreography.

Couldn't agree more Linda. Susanna's AT is a prime example, turn the music off and it looks a lot better.

As I suggested in another thread I am sure I could do a great Rumba to this:

Jane Birkin et Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime,...Moi Non Plus
http://youtu.be/k3Fa4lOQfbA

[smelling salts please for Darcey and Bruno ... ]

LOL. I have thought of several responses to this - all of them unpublishable.

Saturday tea time family audience Henry!

I suppose different dances have different beats and rhythms. So if the music has the wrong beat and tempo for the dance then maybe it would become impossible to choreograph something consistent with the dance.

Pretty much yep and sometimes it might have the right beat/tempo but the musical phrasing is off so there's nothing in the song to give the "light and shade" to a routine that provides the contrast.

They do and it is. Doesn't stop them trying to shoehorn an inappropriate dance to an entertaining song though, - Iwant the rolls eyes smilie back!

Just for you Henry - equally sexy and a tad more suitable for a Saturday tea time BBC 1 show.
