At that price id buy the disc, however I'll be trialing it to decide been this and project cars.
Agreed. Probably best to try out the PS+ version for a while, and if it's great pick it up from Amazon or a supermarket for £40-something...... and nobody can take it away from you.

Upgrading the PS+ Edition of Driveclub to the full version will cost £42.99 but will only be playable as long as you are a subscriber.

If you want the full version of Driveclub to keep forever you'll have to get the retail or full digital download version. (I'm guessing £52.99)

I think this will get changed as it's a stupid idea but if not, I'll not be upgrading, that's for sure.

The upgrade price is ridiculous, but nothing unusual really given some of the previous digital prices.

The lack of content is a disappointment, particularly given previous comments about it being the full game 'minus a few cars/tracks', but I'm not entirely surprised - they still need to give people a reason to buy the retail version.

The horrific part is the fact that you lose the upgraded game if your sub lapses. It's completely the opposite for any other paid ps+ discounted games and I could see many parents who aren't gamers themselves being caught out by this.

Definitely a bad move on sony's part, and taking all three points together, plus the production delay, they've not done themselves any favours with this game.

Pre-ordered on disc and no doubt I'll get Project Cars too.

The Upgrade program is just flat out awkward, considering how Sony have been treating gamers recently, this is the kind of stunt Old Microsoft would pull, I can't see them sticking with this, I'd assume they'll just scrap the $50 Upgrade all together, and just offer the full version for something like $55 instead for PS+ Members (which most PS4 users would be anyway).

Either way, this is one of the biggest let downs in recent times, Sony could scare people away with this kind of crap.

The upgrade is flat out 'robbery'.

Does this just highlight a major issue with the licencing system on PS store. I guess this is due to the fact that once you buy a game as PS+ content you then cannot buy that same game as a proper purchase if it appears really cheap in a sale. So you buy Driveclub PS+ edition and then unlock the content for the rented version because the system cannot change a purchase from rented to purchased.

I think this will change before launch if its at all possible because this system will never take off if the upgrade is a rental only,

As I see it, it boils down to:

1) A free PS+ edition, with cut down tracks/cars etc.

2) A full PS+ edition, with full content but linked to your PS+ sub expiry. The PS+ sub expiry is the cost for getting all content at a (presumably) slightly reduced cost over the full version.

3) A full version.

I have no idea why anyone would go for option 2, particularly when it's very likely that it will end up more expensive than buying the full version in the shops after a while.

If it gets good reviews, I'll get the disc based version.

WOW - Sony have lost the plot big time.

I was really looking forward to Drive Club. I understood the PS+ version was going to be limited but if it turned out to be a good game I was more than prepared to upgrade to the full version. But, now I couldn't care less what the game is like. There is no way I'm going to purchase an upgrade at that price to get what is in effect a time limited version (lets call it a PS++ version). The only time I have every bought upgrades for a PS+ version is for DLC to add to the full game and in those cases the DLC was no more than £10. But over £40 for what is in effect just DLC is outrageous.

Given this pricing model I'm also not going to purchase the disk version since Sony need to get the message that this is not acceptable.

Two ways to look at this.

£42.99 for a time limited upgrade IS a rip off price. If they said sub £30 then ok that would be fine.

However you are getting a taster demo to try so if you like it just shop around for the disk based version.

If 80% of PS4 owners bought the disk version over the Plus version then it would send a clear message to sony. Vote with your wallets.

Like Microsoft and the Xbox 180 fiasco, Sony will probably backtrack on this after seeing the uproar.

I don't see this as been a big problem.

Sure the upgrade is robbery so just don't buy it. There must be some people out there who never intend on stopping their ps+ sub so a reduced rate would suit them down to the ground.

But if it doesn't suit other people, and they like the ps+ offering and want the full game, they can buy a disk, or buy the full game digitally, like they were going to do anyway.

Why would people outrage over been given another purchasing option ? They're not taking anything away from you.

Providing a taster on PS+ then providing an upgrade at a lower cost seems a good marketing tool which could work for other games but this just makes the whole thing seem pointless.

The reason you get the upgrade at a reduced rate is because you have already purchased some of the content as part of your PS+ subscription so why should you end up paying the same as everyone else while also been penalised by not actually owning the full games you have just bought.

This is not an extra purchasing option this is an expensive rental option disguised as an extra purchase option. The scheme we all though was going to happen would have been an extra purchasing option and an exciting one at that.

I still think this is due to a flaw in the PS store more than anything as it seems a crazy decision.

Its even more crazy if you consider this statement on the Blog from last year.

In addition to that, we have another surprise up our exhaust pipe! Purchase DRIVECLUB at retail or digitally via the PlayStation Store, and you’ll get a 50% discount voucher for a 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription.
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/...-art-revealed/

Assuming Sony haven't ditched that idea then the retail version effectively works out at £33 instead of £53 and the limited, tied PS+ upgrade costs £43 or £10 more than retail!

Sony marketing really haven't thought this one through one bit.

Has anyone seen this howler on the blog?

pinkplaybunny 7 May, 2014 @ 8:20 pm
Usually if you buy something that is discounted on ps+ you don’t lose it when your sub runs out. I take it if you pay to upgrade you don’t lose the game if your sub expires in the same way. Please confirm.
and Sonys reponse
Chris Brown 7 May, 2014 @ 8:24 pm
You’re right – you don’t loose the content, it stays on your machine. You only loose access to play it when your PS+ subscription lapses.

As long as your PS+ subscription is active, you can access the free version of the PS+ Edition and the upgrade (if you’ve purchased it).
quite rightly Chris Brown was torn to shreds over that comment.

This game better be good.
I'll play the plus version but will be keeping a close eye to see if this or project cars becomes the car game of choice over the piece and go for disc version of that one.

Well what Chris Brown said wasn't incorrect. This all seems like a licensing issue with PS+ content so paying the £43 is effectively unlocking DLC for the PS+ Edition and DLC is useless without access to the main game.

Just reading back I see the clubs reduced from 12 to 6 as 6 v 6 gives tighter racing.

I'm reading that it possibly stuttered along and so they reduced it. The same criticism that titanfall received for being only 6 v 6 could be applied here.
I need to stop reading about this game as the more I read the more I don't fancy it.

He was asked if you lose the game when your sub expires. Of course you lose the game. You don't lose the files or the settings but in most normal peoples world the game is the actual thing that you play, not the files. So since you cant access the file content you lose the game. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous.

I hope thing change before this game is released because I actually think the idea of a cut down version of the game been released on PS+ then the rest been supplied as an upgrade is a great idea. I have played a few games on PS+ and thought "I would have bought this if I had played it first". It would mean getting free access to game as soon as they are released, but I don't want to pay to upgrade only to receive a rental. I want a full game I can keep even if I don't stop subscribing to PS+.

This is a system which could really move digital downloads forward, but instead it just reinforces my view that physical is better.

For me option 2 is still the cheapest option as I will be halving with a mate. The disc version would be no use in that regard and I am not going to get rid of PS+ any time soon (I have 2 years on my account).
