For me option 2 is still the cheapest option as I will be halving with a mate. The disc version would be no use in that regard and I am not going to get rid of PS+ any time soon (I have 2 years on my account).
Thats the thing isn't it, when this game gets released it will likely see a sharp fall in price at retail compared to that of the digital version (whether upgrade or full). We have seen this happen with Titanfall which can now be bought for under £30 on Xbox One. Offering for free a very limited version is a rather cackhanded and frankly imoral way of selling the game. When you buy a game it shouldn't be subject to continuing PS+, frankly it the full game should be that. Lets be honest £42.99 for the upgrade is effectively the cost of the full game at retail, so it makes no sense for it to be that high. PS+ is supposed to come with discounted games. In this instance its just bringing it down to high street level only you don't get to keep the game or continue playing it if your subscription lapses, it is in effect a very expensive way to rent a game.

Sony needs to rethink this one over.

Hang on they are charging you £42.99, 'upgrade/add-on' that always requires a PS+ subscription. Not good. I would never support such a thing, no matter how good, essential and valuable an PS+ subscription is.

It's further proof a standalone product should have everything included, which is why paying an extra fee for online play is not for me.

I've just seen an update from Sony on Facebook

UPDATE > If you have #DRIVECLUB PS+ Edition & upgrade, we'll ensure you keep full game access even if your PS Plus subscription runs out.
Hats off to Sony - that was a very quick response

Good news. Didn't think that would last for long. Sony have been pretty generous of late and have generated a lot of goodwill amongst gamers. It would be a shame for them to throw it all away.

Good news.

From the PS Blog:

UPDATE: Our priority for DRIVECLUB is to enable you to play and enjoy everything it has to offer and PlayStation recognises that the prior plan for DRIVECLUB entitlement for the upgrade to the PS Plus edition was not appropriate. As a result, we have adjusted the PlayStation Plus terms for DRIVECLUB.

Now, If you intend on downloading DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition, and upgrading to the full game experience, you will have access to the full game even if your PlayStation Plus subscription runs out.

The silly thing is that I'm sure the majority of people who bought the PS+ update would continue with their sub anyway. This was more an issue of principle than anything else. I don't think Sony were ever going to lose any money by letting people keep Driveclub if their sub lapsed. So they have definitely taken the sensible route. They listened to their customers and they took note.

That makes sense now. Buy the game normally or get a discount digitally if you're a plus member.

The outrage should stop now.

Been devils advocate here, could this have been a publicity stunt from Sony?

Unlikely - It seems to be a marketing issue. I've seen it many times before in the IT industry. Development make an awesome product and then marketing step in to price and sell it. Marketing generally don't understand their customers as well as developers do so they come up with a plan to make the finance dept happy not knowing that it will make the customers happy.

Nice. As said was more a principle thing. Actually gives me a bit of a dilemma now on disc or digital as probably take a little while for it to reach that price at retail.

Depending on how the new tracks/cars come about that aren't in the PS+ version, i reckon i'll just play the PS+ free version until i feel i'm missing out on the other tracks/cars and decide on disc/digital then.

Looking forward to trying this out. I think my main concern is finding another 5 folk who stick with the game and not move on to whatever game comes out the following week.

That's my concern too. And added to that that The Crew, Project Cars and this are all due, I want to go with which is the best game, has a good community and has some consistent players.

Good we basically get the full game over 1 Country and 10 cars though. If boredom doesn't set in then we can stick with that

I'm feeling less excited about this. I didn't realise it was track originally. I thought it was roaming open world challenging people.

I'm not usually a fan of in-car, because you can't see so much of the game world. Bonnet cam for me.

I was reading over at ign about the microtransactions in this game, you can pay to buy cars earlier than levelling up and unlocking them. It's also only 30fps.

I'm less and less pushed about this game as time goes on. I think the ps+ version will do me fine. Driving around the USA sounds more interesting to me atm.
