"EE will step up its investment in call quality and reliability with £275 million in 2014. The UK's largest network revealed its 'plans to set a new benchmark' for voice calls, spending a proportion of its overall £1.5 billion investment on improvements. The investment in the new year will see more than 5,000 old 2G sites upgraded, capacity increased on 5,500 3G network sites, which now carries two thirds of EE calls. The operator will also conduct trials on 4G voice call services. The operator has seen a 25% increase on the volume of calls since the beginning of 2012, and has already upgraded 6,000 2G sites to reduce dropped calls by half. On top of that EE has increased capacity on 1,600 3G sites, supporting 50% more calls, while installing a new Home Location Register (HLR) database to improve call success."

Not really, just that data services will become the differentiator and the biggest area of growth.

I don't really understand all of these apps that give you 'free' calls. Most plans come with an obscene amount of minutes anyway.

Personally, I don't want to get to the stage where I have to open up an app to call someone, I just want to dial a number and hit dial, after all, that's what phones are for.

The only reason I'd use something like Skype etc is because it's cheaper than international calling.

Some contributers on DS think that mobile voice calls are a low proiority and a thing of the past and that data is all that matters. Obviously EE the UK'smost aggresive provider in terms of mobile data technology think otherwise and be sqirming at the sight of the news announced today.

So this thread is more to have a go at DS posters' opinions, as opposed to adding anything remotely worthwhile to the forum as a whole...
*Sigh*

What is the "voice calling" you speak of? Is it like internet stuff? That's all I use my phone for.

..and some networks have more than 1/2 their users without smartphones and the rest with tiny allowances using the smallest amount of data as a collective than any other network, despite being the biggest by customer numbers!

Voice is still important, but many use their phones as much if not more for data than for voice. EE is spending a fraction of their networking investment making sure call performance is good, which is great.

Remind me again, which networks offer better voice quality if you rank them? O2, Voda, Three, EE?

Which networks have the most dropped calls in the Root Metrics reports?

Which networks offer HD voice and which don't?

Well Mr Wonk!

Three and EE have the best call quality as well as support for HD Voice. O2 and Vodafone do not support HD Voice and have no future plans to support it.
The network with the most dropped calls according to root metrics is Vodafone followed by O2.

Do i get a gold sticker!???

Even if he does say that (and I don't agree), the other 2 points about the lack of HD voice support and the diabolical call quality on O2 still stand.

Diabolical is a bit unfair mate, I'd go with disastrous.

You do realize the phone dialler on most smartphones is an app right?

To be fair, networks have been complaining about dwindling voice call revenue for many years now. Though most of that comes from reduced calling prices (thanks EU/OFCOM) rather than reduced number of calls.

Even if he does say that (and I don't agree), the other 2 points about the lack of HD voice support and the diabolical call quality on O2 still stand.
You keep saying that and yet are also quick to point out at least one of those networks has the highest proportion of non-smartphone (i.e. call/text-only) users, the most customers of any individual brand, and the lowest complaint levels. Something doesn't add up.

I also don't see many people who use O2 simultaneously along with other networks complaining about call quality.

I also haven't seen anyone who actually uses O2 as their main or joint-main phone complaining about voice quality or dropped calls.
They probably can't tell the difference on their Motorola Startac.
