Seeing as he finally got his cameo on Doctor Who (albeit five(ish) doctors) , can you think of any other genuine celebrity fan (and I mean fan rather than just celebrity) appearing in a cameo/ or episode(s) of Dr Who? I suspect Simon Pegg was a fan of the show (just a guess) and Capaldi in Pompeii? Any others?

Since he used to base part of his act on the Doctor Who Theme tune I presume Bill Bailey is a fan and he got to appear in Doctor, Widow, Wardrobe.

Kylie Minogue is a fan (even reads the novels).

Tracy-Ann Oberman is long term fan and was thrilled to get a part. I think John Barrowman has been quoted as having been a fan as a kid growing up in Scotland? And Dan Starkey is another long-term fan and Doctor Who Magazine reader.

On a slightly different note, Andrew Smith - writer of Full Circle - was a big fan. This story was basically the first bit of fan fiction to make it to the screen.

The revived series has used many fans-turned-professional writers, such as Paul Cornell, Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts, Rob Shearman, and many others, including RTD and the Moff himself.

Back on track, I'm sure I read that Bernard Bresslaw was delighted to be cast as Varga as he loved the show. Although he thought that an Ice Warrior would look like a Viking with a bit of fake snow on top, and he was a little baffled when he was told to report to a fibreglass boat building company for his costume fitting...

On the Audio Book fronts excellent comedian Stuart Lee and Self Playing Snooker champion Richard "Me1" Herring starred in an audio adventure involving the Cybermen.

Another double act that were fans and got a voice only role in their favourite series would be Mitchell and Webb as the sarcy robots in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.

(You all should give Frank Skinner's show on Absolute Radio on Saturday Mornings a go btw, it usually has some Who references each week. Frank has been to BFI events, chatted with Stephen Moffatt and even listens to the audio books while walking around London so something usually comes up )

Didn't Samuel West do his two-or-three lines in Dimensions in Time only because he's a huge fan?
