Def Leppard are allegedly looking into legal action as a result of a new song from pop megastars One Direction sounding very similar to iconic Leppard hit, Pour Some Sugar On Me.

The songs certainly sound similar.

That's it ! All the way through their performance on X Factor on Sunday I was trying to recall what it reminded me of. The best I could think of was 'I Love Rock n' Roll', but it didn't seem right.

Unquestionably influenced by Def Leppard.

Whether it's called plagiarisation or inspiration, I'm not sure. I don't know what criteria they use to distinguish the two.

This is where it all goes horribly wrong isn't it - trying to be cool, pretending to play a guitar, releasing a greatest hits album with a dodgy title like 'Part 1' or 'So far..' Then the tragic break up and the Harry Styles solo album as the rest vanish without a trace.

Is this a generic comment to show how 'cool' you are by slagging them off, or do you have actual examples?

Yes I do (others will probably agree)

Best Song Ever copies The Who - Baba O'Reilly
Story Of My Life sounds like a Mumford and Sons track.
Live While We're Young: They used it in What Makes You Beautiful and then again in One Thing!

It sure was strange seeing this thread title while listening to "When Love & Hate Collide". If that had been the song being discussed, it would have been too creepy.

Was it? Well, if they are nicking riffs and whatnot, at least they're stealing from the greats!

It sure was. Outrageous.

We'll probably have their take on Smoke On The Water next.

And this is what Pete Townsend said about it!

*No! I like the single. I like One Direction. The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we’ve all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don’t mean great music – not always. I’m still writing songs that sound like Baba O’Riley – or I’m trying to!. It’s a part of my life and a part of pop’s lineage. One Direction are in my business, with a million fans, and I’m happy to think they may have been influenced a little bit by The Who.*

If DL have any sense they will take the same attitude after all their pour some sugar sounds like a Queen song.

Regardless of what Townsend said, it still stands that 1D song had a riff from Baba O'REilley.

And does He Know is very similar to Jessie's Girl, just a faster version. And What Makes You Beautiful sounds like Summer Nights, while Live while You're Young sounds like should I Stay Or should I Go - even VH1 on their commercial break mixes those 2 songs because they are the same in melody.

I wish 1D fans just admit they are doing this, no point in denying it and saying everyone is wrong. People have ears and they can notice.

In their defence, it's not like they have any creative input in their music, so the blame can hardly be laid at their door.

They actually co-wrote the song so they are not so innocent this time. However, I put the blame on Simon because he clearly thinks people are stupid not to notice. Maybe an actual lawsuit would make him stop. Say what you want about covers, but at least you know it is a cover, fair and square.

I don't think any 1D fans in this thread are saying they are not copying although I prefer to say they are using riffs from other songs. Considering it is the first 5 secs of summer nights I think it is stretching it to say WMYB sounds like the same song.

You may disregard what Townsend said but I don't. I think he talk sense and as a literature graduate I see it in books and plays all the time, same plot different characters. There is only so many stories and same with songs. I bet if we all looked hard enough every new song would have a similarity or a riff somewhere to another

Pour some sugar has a definite ring to a Queen song
